  1. Multiple problems with Windows 10

I seem to be locked in an endless stream of hurt here.

The startup list doesn't show up - I can't start Cortana. I can access command stuff through Win-R and type in the CMD line. I can download from the internet - but not open anything I download - when I try I get "The supplied kernel information is invalid". If I enter the program file and hit the *.exe I get the same message.

If I click on the icon to launch a program I get the message that the "The Windows Installer Service Could Not be Accessed" - if I try and download this I can't run it.

I tried running a full Windows Defender scan which found nothing. I tried to open Windows Installer Service via "net start MSIServer" - it says it is running but I can't find it among processes and still nothing launches. I do have access to a laptop so can can download a fresh install of Win 10 from that but am not sure how to do that.

Aaaargh (oh yeah and the sound doesn't work either and there is no "history" in any of the logs ....

    :)

  2. problems with windows 10 and google chrome

since loading windows 10 i have seen a number of frustrating issues when using google chrome which i have never had before. The most frustrating of these (i have a touch screen laptop) is if i drag the cursor over the screen it resizes either larger or
smaller which is not what i want. Not a techie so whilst i have tried to fix it looking at other issues i have still not been successful - any ideas how i can fix this please?

Multiple Problems with Acer with Windows 10

I have a Acer TravelMate5744 that came with Windows 7. I did the original free upgrade to Windows 10. A few months later my main login of 3 started having problems. I had to transfer all my files to a external drive and then delete that login and start
it over. The other logins were not effected.

Now for more recently. Same computer. I started having issues with, believe it or not, Notepad and Paint not saving or opening files. I did a type of restore that was only supposed to maybe remove any recently installed programs and revert to a earlier time.
It has made my computer a boat out of water. I can't open items, I can't connect to the internet...there is way to even set up a connection, the usb and CD/DVD drive is useless. That means I have no way of rescuing any files. Also Windows has deactivated.
You can't activate unless you can connect to the internet. I dreaded the days that they stopped giving Windows discs with a new computer. It was so much easier to do your own repairs back then.

I have been gifted a new computer. I'm still trying to figure out a way to get my Acer working again.

If anyone has any ideas please let me know.

I can't right click to get to anything from Start either.

    Multiple problems with Windows 10

Hello, as I understand it, it seems you can't actually launch some programs at all, but can launch a browser (as you say you can download things). This questions whether you can run the standard diagnostics and be able to do an in-place upgrade repair install (which starts by launching Setup.exe from a Win 10 mounted iso or bootable medium.

    History:
Do you have any idea what may have led to this? Did it just suddenly happen, or have things been getting progressively worse?

    Disk check:
Here the safest thing for you to try is to use a portable program (no installation).
14 Free Hard Drive Testing Tools (September 2017)
Try the second, check the SMART parameters, and do a surface test.

You can download that on your other PC, put it on a flash drive e.g.

Please post a screenshot of the result (or a picture or whatever you can).

What sort of disk is your system disk? HDD? SSHD? SSD? ....

    What is your Windows build?
    Windows key + R, winver.

Given the above, we will know which Windows build to download and if it's worth attempting and in-place upgrade repair install which keeps all your programs and data

Do you have full backups and/or disk images? (If you use disk imaging routinely as a keep recommending, it will be easy to restore an image onto a good disk, and you would be up and running in under an hour and probably wouldn't be needing technical help).

  5. I had a backup of the original Win 10 installation on another drive (HDD).

I've now updated Win 10 and most of the programs. Will leave for a few days then format my bad SSD version and then clone to it.

I don't know what triggered this.

Thanks for your suggestions though (I have now initiated restore points!).

    Cheers,

A restore point can let you undo registry and file changes if something goes wrong, but it's no protection against drive failure. The 'disk imaging' Dalchina suggested goes much further. A disk image is a snapshot of your entire system, stored on an external drive. It enables you to restore your system to a replacement drive and carry on as if nothing had happened. It is also a good way out in the system gets so corrupted that it cannot even boot.

Most here recommend Macrium Reflect (free) for that purpose.

Further, disk imaging creates compressed images. You create a base image, then manually or on a schedule 'update' that by creating a new image file which represents the changes from the base image (differentially - = with respect to the base image, or incrementally = with respect to the base image and all other incremental images. These last two are smaller and faster.

Creating an image from an SSD over USB3 might take <12 mins.

Images can be of - all partitions for Windows - any combination of disks or partitions.

Images can be mounted and files extracted, and even used with a 3rd party program to transfer your programs to a new OS or PC.
