Must troubleshoot every time I log on - default gateway not available'

Morning - every time I wake the computer, I must go through the troubleshoot in order to resolve my issue.

I have 2 routers - one is a Netgear that I've been using for a couple of years; every device I have is linked to his - the other is an Arris that was recently supplied by my internet provider.

Even with the 2 routers, when I was running Win8 I had no logon issues.

I'd LOVE to disable the search for wifi feature, but fear I must lose the Netgear, relink EVERYTHING, and go with the Arris.

    Any thoughts?

    :)

  2. Wired network disconnects in Windows 10

When I troubleshoot it says default gateway is not available and it fixes it but I have to troubleshoot it every 10 minutes to fix.

    Option 2 didn't do anything.

  3. No internet found after switching WLAN connection, Default Gateway not updating

After the previous update on my Lenovo Z51 running windows 10, I've found that switching he wi-fi connection to any other network causes the network to appear to have "no internet connection". Troubleshooting the network fixes the problem with the message
"default gateway not available - fixed". This happens every time I switch networks regardless of which network I connect to or whether I've connected to that network before. The problem seems to be that the default gateway doesn't update when the network is
    switched.

Here is the "default gateway" part of the "Wireless LAN Adapter" output of
    ipconfig
    during different conditions:

Normal, working connection to network 1:

    Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : fe80::1%18

    192.168.1.1

After connecting to network 2, no internet found:

    Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.1

After running network diagnostics, "default gateway not available - fixed":

    Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.0.1

After connecting again to network 1, no internet found:

    Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : fe80::1%18

    192.168.0.1

After running network diagnostics, "default gateway not available - fixed":

    Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : fe80::1%18

    192.168.1.1

What seems to be the problem and is there any way to fix this? I am constantly moving around and frequently have to connect to different WLANs.

Ethernet connections do not seem to be affected

The laptop is dual booted with Linux, which has no problem switching networks, hence the
network interface card is working fine

Hadn't thought about that - I'm an old lady here <g> how does one do that? I'm sure I have the documentation SOMEWHERE, but it's a whole lot easier to ask!
I've rebooted the Netgear a couple of times to no avail.

Sorry, just saw the link in your msg! Man, I AM getting old!
Just took me 10 minutes to find the doggone command prompt!
    Ethernet Adapter: disconnected
    Wireless LAN: disconnected
Wireless LAN Adapter WiFi: seems OK as the default address is the same as what's on the Netgear page.

Hi I'm getting old also! I'm not sure where we're going?? Not sure why you have two routers or why you have to trouble shoot every time. Is your NETGEAR plugged into a Aries modem? I'm thinking your ISP provided the modem that you plug your NETGEAR wireless router into. I have a Wireless NETGEAR all in one. Works great. Not sure why the upgrade would cause that problem!
Here's some things you could check.

Boy, I don't why there'd be an issue either. And actually, the two routers were playing nicely together until the Win10 upgrade! See I already had the Netgear when TimeWarner upgraded their internet to high speed so I got the Arris modem, which has an internal router! Confused? Yep, me, too. And obviously the routers are as well!
I guess I'll just delete the Netgear and put it in storage. Or maybe I'll try a different wiring configuration (if I can) coming out of the modem.
Or I could just grit my teeth & run the diagnostics every time I wake the computer up!
Thanks for the possibilities. I'll run a couple more of them down.

  9. I wonder if that might be part of your problem???
It might be somehow conflicting with your other router or some other hardware or software network component???

    >>Have you tried calling TWC to have them disable the "wifi hotspot" built in to the new modem???

The feature is enabled by default when you install their new modem.
If you have your own router, you need to call them to have them disable the one built-in to the new modem (IOW you cannot do it yourself).
Tell them to fully disable it (not just make it "opt-out").
You will know they have actually done it when both of the bottom 2 LEDs on the front panel are no longer illuminated.
(If you have a wifi-enabled device, such as a smart phpne or laptop, the 2 new SSIDs that show up now because of the new modem will disappear once TWC fully disables the wifi feature in the modem.)
The other advantage of disabling this feature is that others will no longer see or be able to access your network via the modem/wifi hotspot -- privacy.*Smile

    Having said all of that:
I am just a stoopid old home user, know next to nothing about networking, and am not yet running Win 10.
My setup is the TWC modem with my own wireless router, so I don't know if any of this applies to your situation.

But it might be worth a try, at least until someone here who is a networking expert has a chance to help.

Let us know how it goes,

    MM

Hey Moxie! Thanks for helping. I have the combined modem- router. I have a AC1750 WiFi Cable Modem Router Model C6300.
It took me 10 minutes to get it set up and going.
It might be a good idea to check with ISP and see it the units are compatible. My cable people are very helpful for these things.
If they really want your business, they will help you!!

  11. Hi, @donetao:

I think that might be a good idea.
You now actually have *3* routers (the 2 you own and the one built in to the wireless gateway/modem device from TWC).

I'm not sure why you would need more than 1 router?
But my hunch is that there might be a conflict somewhere between all of these devices, which may be unrelated to Win10, per se.

If you call TWC and have them disable the wifi on your new modem, you do not burn any bridges (you can always call them back to re-enable it).
And, as suggested, they might be able to further assist with troubleshooting.

    Just my humble suggestion,

    MM

Must troubleshoot every time I log on - default gateway not available'

Well, the saga continues. Turned off the Netgear router and still had to troubleshoot! And after the nasty power company rep, I'm almost afraid to call Time Warner! <G>
After I get the soap going, I'm going to try moving the cables around. Or I may just reboot the TWC modem/router. That's about the only thing I haven't tried yet!
Thanks for all the possibilities, y'all!

Hi At this time, I'm thinking you might not have your router set up to connect automatically! Try going into properties and see if you have it set up to connect automatically.

Whew this is frying my brain! I suspect there's an issue with the TWC router/settings. When I had the Netgear totally off, I was still having issues.
Believe I'll tackle this again tomorrow morning during/after the coffee!
Thanks donetao for all the understandable help! I may actually get TWC to ping the router from their end if rebooting the thing doesn't work. . . .
