My computer keeps sleeping. Event ID 42 & Event ID 187 are involved. Hard drive activity...

My ASUS laptop keeps going to sleep whenever it is doing any heavy hard drive activity. If I bring up my photos, or if I download a lot of files all at once, or my cloud storage is transferring lots of files it will go to sleep every 2 minutes.

The details from the system log are:
User-mode process attempted to change the system state by calling SetSuspendState or SetSystemPowerState APIs.

HControl.exe is provided by ASUS, as it’s an ASUS laptop. If I stop HControl running, instead of sleeping (or hibernating) it just turns off suddenly and restarts.

    This is the following event:

    The system is entering sleep.

    Sleep Reason: Application API

I’m getting to the point that I can’t use this computer anymore. It happens so often I can’t do online meetings or any work on it.

Does anyone have any ideas what is causing this or how to prevent it happening?

    :)

Hi, suggest you try Hard Disk Sentinel (trial) - gives a great quick analysis (SSDs too).

    Please post the results.

This event may be an indication that the specified drive may be failing soon. This is especially true if the event is recorded regularly. The first step is to run the maintenance utilities related to hard drives, starting with CHKDSK and the utilities available from the manufacturer for that specific brand.
