  1. My drive keeps filling with thousands of tmp files

My hard drives keeps filling with tmp files, I try deleting them but within a couple of hours they're all back again and when I say filling up, I mean filling up 30,000 of them got deleted at the last count.

I've tried the microsoft store fix that was issued as a potential solution to problem but that hasn't worked.

This has been going on for days now, I've tried everything I can think of including scanning for malware but nothing works, I clear them and within a couple of hours my disk is full up again and my laptop grinds to a halt.

    I'd appreciate any help

    • Right-click This PC, and then select Advanced System Setting.
    • Click Environment Variables.
    • Under system variable, double-click tmp and change the path for the file of your reference.

    C Drive Keeps Filling Up

Thanks. Extremely interesting article. I followed the steps as outlined, but when I was as the step to Stop the Windows Modules Installer Service, it was already stopped. So I was not quite sure how to proceed, so I abandoned the process. Since I had
already manually deleted most of the cab files, I now have 190 GB free space. I will closely monitor the free space to see how quickly it fills up, and if it fills up as quickly as the article suggests might happen, I will try again to follow the instructions
to see if I can get it to work. With the service already stopped, and set to Manual, if I get to that point again, do you have any suggestions on how to proceed? Thanks again for this very insightful article -- it sure explains a lot.

My drive keeps filling with thousands of tmp files

Hundreds of MSI####.tmp files in C:/ Drive

    Hi,

    Update to my previous posts.

I managed to delete all 1890 MSI####.tmp files on C:/ Drive by doing this
( Warning this caused a further complication so please read full post before doing this ):-

Right click on C:/ drive and opening Properties

    On the Security Tab

    To change permissions click edit

on Edit change from System to ( My name ) on list of Group or User names click Add

Then on Permissions for Authenticated Users click on Full Control

Click OK and then Apply and OK

This will open a Dialog Box asking if you want to change C:/ drive permissions click yes OK.

Then change will run on C:/

After this has finished select all MSI####.TMP files and select delete and select yes to Delete all files.

I finally thought that I had found the solution when all the MSI####.TMP files vanished.

Then I rebooted computer but it just stayed on Restarting Computer Screen and would not go any further.

I then tried several ways of trying to recover Windows ( Booting to Safe Mode, Startup Repair, System Restore, Windows Repair Disk and CMD with chkdsk or fixboot. etc..., did not work.

There may have been a way to fix the Restarting problem, but as I had a System Image from before when I started getting the MSI.tmp files, I finally re-imaged which gave me a clean C:/ Drive.

I know this was not a Solution to the original problem but for me it was the final solution, so I am now going to close this post but mark it as Unsolved.

Thanks for the help and suggestions from ZigZag3143

    Regards,

    Mike
