Windows 10: My Fifth and Final Attempt to Upgrade Windows 7 Pro

No one has a solution?

 

I have Win7 Pro SP1 on my Ontario computer and Win 8.1 on my Florida one. I installed Win10 Build 9926 on a new 256 GB SSD and brought the SSD when I came back from FL and plugged it in to my computer here and have been doing upgrades up until 10122 so far. Unplugged the Win7 drive so as to not have any funny business. I don't intend to give up my license for Win7 so won't be upgrading it. I have another SSD somewhere and if I can find it, I will install Win7 SP1 and try to upgrade it to Win10. You're got me curious now.

24GB ram may be the problem. Try removing all but 4GB (or 8GB is has to be paired) and see what happens. You can put all the ram back after the install if it works.

 

It was not a problem when I upgrade to build 10049 so why would it be now or ever??

 

This is a grasping at straws type of idea, as the TP's move closer to the RTM could an upgrade through windows update be dependent upon a previous installation of the earlier TP? I've only used WU to install new versions with little problems noted other than how long it takes.

It takes a long time, I have an 18M connection and between that and the install it's probably 4 hours or more. After the first time taking that long I now wait until the new TP is being installed and usually go to bed. I use WMware player freeware ver. 7.1.0 build-2496824 on a Win7 Home Premium SP1 host.

Maybe try installing an earlier version and then trying the upgrade. I've reviewed the thread and don't think I've seen whether you've tried it that way. What a PIA you've been through so far, jeez WU is how this OS is supposed to be installed so they really need to get that part working.

 

The build that I am on is about as close to the RTM that I can get. I have had zero problems with any clean install. I did upgrade to 10049 with all of my ram intact. Unless I can upgrade what I have, I will stay with Windows 7 and/or buy Windows 10 and do a clean install. The latter would be a last resort.

You do have Service Pack 1 installed on your Windows 7 machine?

Ok, thanks, this might be a clue.
The active partition is your c:\ drive. I wondered if it were.

What I propose is that you shrink your c: drive and create a 100 mb partition BEFORE the C: partition. Look at the image I posted tas an example (just the 100MB System Reserved and C: partitions- the others are data)

The easiest way I know to do this is with a bootable Minitool Partition Wizard CD.

Essentially, I'm suggesting a move and resize of your C: drive

You'll only need 100 MB to the left of C: for the System Reserved partition. So first you have to shrink C: by 100 MB and then move it. You might be able to do this in one step - it's been a while since I've done this.

The other choice is reinstalling Win7 (oh noooooo) so that the 100 MB partition gets created then. I think Part Wizard is easier. The process takes a while, but not too long (about 20 minutes on my 600 GB drive). It has to move the data and define the new tables.

Think about this and see if other members concur. I don't know if this is causing the issue on your machine, so think hard before going through the process.

After reading a few more of your posts, I see that 10.049 upgraded fine. I had issue with one of the flight rlses (10.049 or 10.061) where the System Reserved partition was corrupted. It was easy to fix, but...
How might that apply to your situation. Guessing here - either the install process after 10.049 'requires' the System Reserved partition or it might try to resize the active partition. I really don't know but the first thing I thought of when I read your thread was an issue with the active partition.

Another member reported a different issue (same rls that I had issues with) - I think it was Cliff S - but regardless of who, the recommendation was to make the Systme Reserved 450 MB (his was 350 MB). Now there are set sizes of rhte partition, I'll look it up and post the information.

As I said.... this is something to think about - not something to do right away. I'd hate to come back to your thread and see that you went through the exercise and I discovered that the recommended Active partition size is 500 MB - Ohhhh noooo.

Ok, I'll check back tomorrow - after doing more thinking. You might download and burn the Minitool PW CD so you have it - it is a very good tool to have in your tool box anyway.

I never had that 100MB partition when I installed Windows 7. I appreciate all of your help and I will save this post, but if I do this it will be for the released Windows 10 and not a TP. For now, I will stay on Windows 7.
