Windows 10: My harddrive disk partition configuration changed unexpectedly

My hard drive disk partition configuration changed unexpectedly. I discovered the problem when I got an error message saying my Windows 10 automatic update failed due to lack of space on the C: drive. The D: drive is now slated as the main data partition and shows 915GB of free space. I had only been using the C: drive for the full 1TB disk drive. I have backed up data files, but not Outlook. My grandson has been playing Xbox games on my PC. Is this what caused the problem. How do I restore my original configuration. Thanks in advance for assistance.

This should be easily resolved, in order to provide you with a solution, open Disk Management (accessible by right clicking your Start Button), please provide a screenshot of the resulting window, so I can view your partition table on that drive . . .

 

W7 Hard drive partition issue

to get rid of that 100 meg windows partition that setup creates for you on a new install on a blank hdd:

- press shift+f10 when on the partition management screen in setup <-- this opens a command prompt
- diskpart <-- start the windows command line partition management tool
- list disk <--- list the installed hdds in this computer for the next step
- select disk 0 <- might have to replace 0 with the number of the correct disk
- clean <-- this will erase all data on the disk you selected one step up- dont use the wrong disk!
- create partition primary <- creates a primary partition taking up all space on the drive, adjust the command if necessary
- exit, exit to exit diskpart and the command prompt
- click refresh in partition manager and select your newly created partition and install to that
