    Hi,

    LOL. No, no, he's just resetting things the way they were when Windows finished installing. It may seem a bit drastic but it may save your install.

    I thought you were dual booting and at least one of them was operational. The one without your work on it. Am I wrong ?

    Fair enough but you really should start to make images of your system....
    In your case doing as suggested by Topgundcp would also reset the user installed software database, I think.

    When you edited the registry was that hardware related or software ?

    Download the w10 iso and reinstall. Be sure to set it to keep your files.

    Hi,

    You just can't delete the entire registry in Windows 10. Not while it's running anyway. You may have deleted some keys though.

    I was suspecting that would be the case.
    Make a copy of your registry backup ( the healthy one) and :

    After that you can try to import your registry backup and hopefully all will be as it was before the mistake.

    If your data folders and files are on the same partition as your OS, you might consider making a Puppy Linux boot [usb or dvd] and copy off your data folders and files onto any trusted external media -- before attempting reconstruction of your Windows.

    Hi,

    No need for Puppy. TS should able to do just that from a second W10 install he already has on the same machine.

    The only other way that may work, would be trying to do it from a Linux Live DVD to get into the drive. It is a risky move. I have never done it. Also chntpw is a chance. chntpw Freecode

    This is for XP. You may want to dig a bit more if this does not work. HowTo: Fix Corrupted Windows Registry from Ubuntu partition

    I did not want to go this route, because it can cause more damage if done wrong, instead of doing an in place repair, which keeps everything, but repairs the Windows OS.

    Hi,

    No, definitely not. You'd loose everything that way.

    Here's an idea: copy all your work files and programs from the messed up install to the working install to the exact same locations. I am assuming the working Windows system drive letter is the same as the old one.

    After that you copy your registry backup to your working system and we will import that file in your working registry.

    Before you proceed make a full image of that working system.

    TS = Topic Starter.

    A repair/upgrade install won't work since that system does not even boot.

    Hi, you could try this:

    Restore your Windows registry
    Here is how to restore your registry from the RegBack directory. The RegBack folder is located in :/windows/system32/config, which is used by Windows to hold a recent backup copy of the registry hives.

    First, boot from a Win 10 bootable installation medium or other suitable boot disk.
    Launch a command prompt.
    Carefully identify the drive letter for your system drive (it will probably not be C: )

    Assuming your system drive is d:, run the following command to restore Windows registry:
    copy d:\windows\system32\config\RegBack\* d:\windows\system32\config

    My registry got corrupted and now I can't boot at all.. [IMG]

    if prompted to overwrite existing files, type All and hit Enter. Type exit and hit Enter to close the Command Prompt window. Restart your computer and most probably, you may able to access your Windows system as before.

    Note: we strongly and repeatedly recommend disk imaging (e.g. Macrium Reflect (free).
    Using disk imaging routinely lets you recover from anything from a failed hard disk to ransomware usually without technical help, quite quickly.

    I think both the thread starter and I want to know: what is TS? Having never used Windows 10, I cannot remember what TS is.

    @dalchina
    That's what I suggested in post #24.
    @fdegrove
    No offend to you but your statement is completely false. The regback folder is backup periodically (every 10 days or so). This is known in the previous version of Windows as "The last known good profile..."
    As you can see. In my PC, this folder is not empty and all files dated 11/9/2016, the backup was triggered by the task scheduler: Task Scheduler Library -> Microsoft -> Windows ->Registry. Was last run successfully on 11/19/2016 (10 days later with no change). If all files in this folder are empty then either the task is not running or restore point was not created properly.

    Hi,

    No offense taken.
    The machine I verified this on is a relatively fresh install. The backup task is scheduled to run on 11/30 which explains the 0 kB files on my machine.
    What I do not understand is why this is also the case for OP though.

    Thanks for the correction provided.
