    After Bitdefender 2017 Uninstall, Defender Won't Turn On

    I have followed the steps listed in the several links related to Defender not turning on, on my HP Spectre Windows 10 Pro (ver 1607 build 14393.693 - upgraded from Win 7 Pro) laptop.

    I ran the Bitdefender Uninstall tool to clean up, and manually deleted files that it left in place (which they insist is a feature, not a bug).

    I have run both CCleaner and Argente Utilities, as suggested elsewhere, looking for leftover files or registry entries.

    I stepped through all the procedures listed in Problems starting Windows Defender
    in Windows 10    , which included using regedit to search for and modify or delete entries.

    When I attempt to turn on real time protection, I receive an error messages: "An unexpected problem occurred....." Error code: 0x8050800c

    My remaining choice, it appears, is a clean install of Windows 10, which, while it will be successful, will also mean re-installation of the dozens of programs I have installed and configured.

    Question: Are there options I have not tried, that I should.

    Windows Defender collision with BitDefender

    I am running Bitdefender Internet Security 2015. Windows Defender seems unaware that Bitdefender is present. I have turned off Windows Defender manually, but, as specified, it turns itself back on.

    The consequence is that, on start-up or waking from sleep, both Antimalware Service Executable and Bitdefender are running, CPU utilization is 100%, and my system freezes for several minutes.

    I also had to turn off Windows Firewall manually, but this, at least, stays off.

    I found the answer on Bitdefender's forum. You can turn off Windows Defender in the Policy settings:

    1.Press the Windows key + R to bring up the Run box. Type gpedit.msc and hit Enter.

    2.In the left pane of Local Group Policy Editor, navigate to the following location:

    Computer Configuration -> Administrative Templates -> Windows Components -> Windows Defender

    3.In the right panel you will see a policy labelled “Turn off Windows Defender“. Double-click on that policy and set it to Enabled.

    Windows Defender, being installed by default with your operating system, will turn itself off if you install any other AntiVirus on the box. (Running multiple AVs simultaneously can cause memory conflicts and performance issues.)

    If after uninstalling Bitdefender you are unable to turn on Windows defender then try the steps provided below and see if it helps.

    • Press Windows key + R to open run box.
    • Type regedit in the run box and press Enter.
    • Now try to navigate HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows Defender.
    • DisableAntiSpyware DWORD

      0 = On

      1 = Off
