  1. Need help deleting a hard drive partition and re-allocating that space to my C drive

I'm only semi-computer savvy, so hopefully I don't sound too dumb trying to explain the situation, but here it is in a nutshell:

I have an old Asus laptop that was running Windows 7. I had a hard drive partition, which gave me two drives: The main C: drive, and the partitioned drive, D:.

I backed everything up onto an external hard drive in preparation of updating the computer to Windows 10. I decided I didn't want the partition anymore, and Googled how to remove a partition ... it looked like it was just as simple as deleting the drive. So I did so, and I just assumed that that deleted all the data on the D: drive and reallocated the space to the C: drive.

So I went ahead and installed Windows 10, which seemed to work fine, but I just noticed that the C: drive only has the same amount of capacity as when it was partitioned with the D: drive -- the space from the D: drive was not reallocated to C:.

So how do I get that space back? I'm thinking it wasn't so simple as deleting the D: drive and now I'm kicking myself for potentially making things more complicated than they needed to be. Thanks in advance for any advice!

    Unallocated Space to C Drive

    Hi Travis,

It appears that a disk partition was created but was never assigned its allocation. Assuming there are no files stored in the unallocated partition, perform these steps to combine it with your C: drive:

    • In Disk Management, right-click on (CNeed help deleting a hard drive partition and re-allocating that space to my C drive :) which appears next to the
      Unallocated partition.
    • Select Extend.

Let us know if you're able to combine the spaces after following the steps above.

    Regards.

    Allocating Hard Drive Space

HI Nicron. I'm Greg, an installation specialist and 9 year Windows MVP here to help you.

The clone on F has somehow become a Dynamic disk which is supposedly only to bridge a partition across multiple hard drives. When it's used on a single disk it is called a Simple Volume. It needs to be converted back to Basic. See here for how that's done -
not the only method that's not destructive of data is Option One using an older version of Partition Wizard which Shawn links for you:

    http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/26829-conv...

I wish you would have asked so I could have suggested you clone it using free Macrium which would have let you resize the original partition on the fly to 2tb using drive tools that would have appeared when you dragged F to the clone. You'd open the drive tools
link, choose resize and drag the right border of F all the way right. You can still do that but you'll need to leave the Factory Recovery partition out of the clone, or delete it off the disk if you convert. It can't run now anyway off of the source drive.

Can you do it over? If so use free Macrium Reflect as shown here:

    http://www.ghacks.net/2015/08/29/the-best-way-t...

    http://knowledgebase.macrium.com/display/KNOW/C...

Make sure it copies only as a Basic partition, leave out the Recovery partition, when you drag F to the clone, click on Drive Tools link that will appear and Resize F into all of the space.

If not you'll need to convert the Dynamic Partition to Basic, delete the Recovery partition, then use Disk Management extend to take up the Unallocated Space.

Keep me posted. I'll be here to help as I've helped in tens of thousands of partitioning cases before, far more than anyone else on the web.
