Windows 10: Need Suggestions for a failed 1809 update

I have an old Dell laptop running 1803 fine. It decided to do the 1809 update today. It did it's thing for quite some time (downloading and such). It displayed some results of checking and indicated everything was OK. When it rebooted, I think it had the normal progress going in the shutdown but got stuck on the reboot. Been sitting that way for maybe 8 hours now. I never saw any sign of disk activity on the reboot although I certainly might have missed that.

So I'm looking for suggestions on what to do now. I do have an image backup from a couple days ago if need be.

I've seen references to trying to upgrade from an iso but it's not clear to me whether that is some update iso or the install iso.

Finally, I think I have configure automatic updates to a '2'. If 1803 is to be this laptop's last hurrah, how can I make sure it doesn't try to update?

This is a Dell D820 running 10 pro x32 (won't run x64). Got to 10 by doing an upgrade about six months ago over win7 pro to activate it, then did a clean 10 pro install. As far as drivers, the only drivers are those from the install or update.

When you finish testing the Avast suggestion, make sure that you restart your machine.

Then if the issue persists, please return to the trouble shooting list in post# 89

I think there are three steps that remain; the WU troubleshooter, reset WU components, and manual WU reset.

I am trying Eagle 51's suggestions now. Windows Update troubleshooter found a bunch of errors and fixed all but one.The update is trying to download KB4025339 again. I'll see what happens. At step one troubleshooter finishes with one error unresolved "Potential Windows Update Database Error Detected-Not Fixed". Windows update stalled at 0%.

At step 2 same troubleshooter error. The KB finished a new download failed to install.
Did step 3 KB has downloaded but fails to install.

If Eagle's suggestion doesn't work I'll try EdTittel's suggestion

Tried bothe Eagle & Ed 's suggestions - do not work. Anyone else?

I have noticed that the latest update for my nvidia drivers has failed to update. Wondering about that!

Hi dalchina. Good news, I followed your suggestion and reinstalled the update and now it appears as "installed correctly" *Biggrin Maybe it was not necessary to run the Windows Update Troubleshooter or maybe if necessary. But using it I do not think it could have worsened something. The installation was very fast, unlike the first time it showed step 1 and step 2 completed.
