Windows 10: Need to Update Gifted Computer -- need advice

First, I'm sort of a luddite when it comes to computers and especially Windows 10, so ELI5, please.

I was gifted an older Dell Latitude computer with the following specs: Windows 10 Pro v. 1709 64-bit x64 i5 3210M 2.5 GHz processor 683 GB HDD - 135 GB free (I loaded a lot of files and photos onto it already, but I can remove them if necessary to get more space if needed for updating)

The previous owner told me that she never upgraded past v. 1709 because she had heard about all the problems with every update, and was afraid it would mess up her computer, which she used for work.

Is there a stable update that I can download manually and update to without problems? I, too, work on my computer and can't afford a long downtime. I don't have a second computer, just a Samsung 8 tablet and smartphone.

Using a Microsoft gift card for purchases

Thanks for your response.

I do get a method of payment option, but it does not list my Microsoft account. There is also a place for debit/credit/gift card payments, but my gift card number does not match the spaces needed.

Any other suggestions?
