Windows 10: Need to Update Outdated WiFi on my Laptop?

I am running 802.11n on my laptop, and the laptop is very slow. It is an i7 Toshiba gaming laptop from 2012 running the latest Windows. The taskmanager shows that I have 802.11n which is topping out at 100 kbps!. Is the task manager just not showing the peak above 100 kbps or is the view the graph displays for Wi-Fi simply limited in its range? I am kinda slow on the internet but that could just be my old laptop.


If it truly is my WiFi interface, how do I bypass the internal wifi and use another device? I mainly use this as a desktop. What device should I use?

Windows 10 wifi not turning on Acer Aspire laptop

In order to get the list of available wireless networks, you have to:

1. Switch on Connect to suggested open hotspots (see the screenshot in question);
   
2. Click on Wifi icon in the right corner. Now you have your networks back.
   

After that the parameter from Step 1 can be turned off, networks will be listed normally after restarting Wifi.

P.S. I feel rather stupid at the moment. I thought that open hotspots are passwordless hotspots and so are presumably not very safe. So of course I've turned that off during installation.
Really hard to see any logic in this case.
