Today, we are releasing the .NET Core April 2019 Update. These updates contain security and reliability fixes. See the individual release notes for details on included fixes.

Security

Microsoft Security Advisory CVE-2019-0815: ASP.NET Core Denial of Service Vulnerability

A denial of service vulnerability exists in ASP.NET Core 2.2 where, if an application is hosted on Internet Information Server (IIS) a remote unauthenticated attacker can use a specially crafted request to cause a Denial of Service.

The vulnerability affects any Microsoft ASP.NET Core 2.2 applications if it is hosted on an IIS server running AspNetCoreModuleV2 (ANCM) prior to and including 12.2.19024.2. The security update addresses the vulnerability by ensuring the IIS worker process does not crash in response to specially crafted requests.

Docker Images

.NET Docker images have been updated for today’s release. The following repos have been updated.

Note: Look at the “Tags” view in each repository to see the updated Docker image tags.

Note: You must re-pull base images in order to get updates. The Docker client does not pull updates automatically.

Azure App Services deployment

Deployment of these updates Azure App Services has been scheduled and they estimate the deployment will be complete by Apr 23, 2019.

Announcing .NET Core 3 Preview 2

.NET Core 3.0 Preview 2 is now available and it includes a bunch of new updates to ASP.NET Core.

Here's the list of what's new in this preview:

To get started with ASP.NET Core in .NET Core 3.0 Preview 2 install the .NET Core 3.0 Preview 2 SDK

If you're on Windows using Visual Studio, you'll also want to install the latest preview of Visual Studio 2019.

Upgrade an existing project

To upgrade an existing an ASP.NET Core app to .NET Core 3.0 Preview 2, follow the migrations steps in the ASP.NET Core docs.

Add package for Json.NET

As part of the work to tidy up the ASP.NET Core shared framework, Json.NET is being removed from the shared framework and now needs to be added as a package.

To add back Json.NET support to an ASP.NET Core 3.0 project:

Add a package reference to Microsoft.AspNetCore.Mvc.NewtonsoftJson

Update your ConfigureServices method to include a call to AddNewtonsoftJson().

Runtime compilation removed

As a consequence of cleaning up the ASP.NET Core shared framework to not depend on Roslyn, support for runtime compilation of pages and views has also been removed in this preview release. Instead compilation of pages and views is performed at build time. In a future preview update we will provide a NuGet packages for optionally enabling runtime compilation support in an app.

Announcing .NET Core 2.2 Preview 2

Today, we are announcing .NET Core 2.2 Preview 2. We have great improvements that we want to share and that we would love to get your feedback on, either in the comments or at dotnet/core #1938.

ASP.NET Core 2.2 Preview 2 and Entity Framework 2.2 Preview 2 are also releasing today. We are also announcing C# 7.3 and ML.NET 0.5.

Docker images are available at microsoft/dotnet for .NET Core and ASP.NET Core.

.NET Core 2.2 Preview 2 can be used with Visual Studio 15.8, Visual Studio for Mac and Visual Studio Code.

Tiered Compilation Enabled

The biggest change in .NET Core 2.2 Preview 2 is tiered compilation is enabled by default. We announced that tiered compilation was available as part of the .NET Core 2.1 release. At that time, you had to enable tiered compilation via application configuration or an environment variable. It is now enabled by default and can be disabled, as needed.

You can see the benefit of tiered compilation in the image below. The baseline is .NET Core 2.1 RTM, running in a default configuration, with tiered compilation disabled. The second scenario has tiered compilation. You can see a significant request-per-second (RPS) throughput benefit with tiered compilation enabled.

The numbers in the chart are scaled so that baseline always measures 1.0. That approach makes it very easy to calculate performance changes as a percentage. The first two tests are TechEmpower benchmarks and the last one is Music Store, our frequent sample ASP.NET app.

.NET Core tooling update for Visual Studio 2019 Preview 2

Another preview of Visual Studio 2019, another update on the cool stuff going into it!

We’re pleased to announce some updates to the .NET Core tools for Visual Studio 2019. You can try these changes out starting with Preview 2. We’d love for you to try out these new features and give us feedback.

Debugging console apps will use the new Integrated Console

Console apps that target .NET Core (or .NET Framework via the .NET SDK) will default to using the new Integrated Console experience when pressing f5 or ctrl+f5:

This should prevent the need to add Console.Read() calls to console apps to prevent the console window from closing immediately after the program has finished executing. The launched console window is also re-used for subsequent runs, so if you’re used to using ctrl+f5, you won’t have lots of console windows to close after you’ve launched your application a few times.

If you’d like to turn this off, you can do so under Tools > Options > Automatically close the console when debugging stops.

Project files are easier to use

We’ve also done a lot of work to make working with project files easier. A lot of users have started to use project files directly now that they are much more human-readable, but tooling support for doing so in Visual Studio has lagged behind.

First, we’ve made project files significantly easier to open. Single-click on a project node will open the file in a Preview tab. Double-click will open the file in a normal file tab:

Project files will now show up in Go to All results (ctrl+T):

MSBuild elements in project files now show up in Find in Files results:

Finally, if a project is misauthored and an error is caused, you can open the project file by double-clicking an error from the error list.
