    Net Framework Reinstall Problem

Hopefully this thread is in the right subforum, wasn't sure where .net framework falls under technically.

Well hello there, thanks in advance for hearing me out, I got a strange issue that has left me stumped.

I recently got a new laptop with Windows 10 (64 bit), mainly used for playing games. To get Windows up to date I used a program called WSUS Offline Update. As the name implies it downloads all the Windows updates (including an option for .net framework) so you can install them at your leisure without an internet connection, it will even reboot for you so you don't have to babysit it.

After WOU finished running, I ran Windows update just to catch a few of the most recent updates that weren't on WOU yet. Everything went fine, afterwards I installed all my drivers and then Steam. Been playing games no problem since.

My troubles came up when I tried to get an older game working (not part of Steam). This particular game (Uthgard, a free server for the mmo Dark Age of Camelot) calls for some certain procedures to get working correctly. I diligently went through each instruction to get the game working, but it still crashes on the splashscreen.

The only thing I haven't tried is reinstalling .net framework, but I'm not sure how because I think WOU may have installed it strangely. Normally you would go to programs & features and uninstall it there, but it isn't there at all when I look. Next I tried looking for the specific update that included .net framework, but the only listed updates were the ones I installed through Windows update after WOU was finished. After that I tried loading the .net framework 4.6 installer I had downloaded to see if there's an uninstall or repair button, but it just says "your version is already up to date."

Next I went to google and found a .net framework repair tool, a .net framework cleanup tool and a .net framework verification tool. First I tried the repair tool and it said it could not fix it. Then I tried the cleanup tool, hoping to wipe out the files to lay the foundation for a clean install. After rebooting I loaded the 4.6 version installer again and it again said "your version is already up to date." Using the verification tool it indeed said that all my .net framework versions were still installed.

Since the cleanup tool didn't work and I can't find it under programs & features, nor the relevant update to uninstall, I'm at a loss at what to do next. Not sure if this is so complicated because I used WSUS Offline Update, most tutorials show the Microsoft .net framework versions clearly under programs & features.

Any help on how to reinstall my .net framework would be greatly appreciated, thank you!

    :)

  2. Windows 10 : impossible to open or save files

    Hi Wing

    so... You done below:

    1. sfc /scannow and DISM

    2. Reinstall .NET Framework

and next, upgrade new build version

    then the problem fixed?

If the process is the same as above

It was the same as my repair process, reinstall .net framework before upgrade is required

Error 0x80073CF3 when reinstalling Windows 10 preinstalled apps

I'm not sure I understand your suggestion. Are you saying I should reinstall the .NET Framework?

This is a fresh install of Windows 10 which has the .NET Framework 4.6 included. In fact I have all of the following:

    Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1

Microsoft .NET Framework 4.5 Multi-Targeting Pack

Microsoft .NET Framework 4.5.1 Multi-Targeting Pack

Microsoft .NET Framework 4.5.1 Multi-Targeting Pack (ENU)

    Microsoft .NET Framework 4.5.1

Microsoft .NET Framework 4.5.2 Multi-Targeting Pack

Microsoft .NET Framework 4.5.2 Multi-Targeting Pack (ENU)

    Microsoft .NET Framework 4.6 SDK

Microsoft .NET Framework 4.6 Targeting Pack

Microsoft .NET Framework 4.6 Targeting Pack (ENU)

Version 4.6.1 is a Release Candidate according to that article and I don't think it's needed to run the applications I'm having trouble with.

Trying to reinstall version 4.6 on a Windows 10 machine results in the following (as expected):

You do not have NET Framework 4.6 Advanced Services listed?

    Net Framework Reinstall Problem [IMG]

You can use this to see it it is enabled or not. Look for those 2: NetFx4-AdvSrvs and WCF-Services45
    Dism /Online /Get-Features

And you can use this to disable / enable it.
    Dism /Online /Disable-Feature /FeatureName:NetFx4-AdvSrvs /Quiet /NoRestart
    Dism /Online /Disable-Feature /FeatureName:WCF-Services45 /Quiet /NoRestart

    Dism /Online /Enable-Feature /FeatureName:NetFx4-AdvSrvs /All
    Dism /Online /Enable-Feature /FeatureName:WCF-Services45 /All

Yes I've seen that, but disabling/enabling isn't the same as reinstalling right? I looked for the specific Windows update (KB2828152) that includes .net framework 4.5/4.6 under Installed Updates in Programs & Features, but it doesn't show up there. I think it's caused the bulk of Windows updates were done through WSUS Offline Update and only the most recent ones were installed through Windows Update.

When I ran the .net framework repair tool I got this message:

"The tool is unable to resolve the installation issue on your computer."

Which version of .NET does the game need? If it's old it may have originally needed .NET version 2 or .NET version 3?

Such old applications can't use the latest .NET version 4.xx and need the older version.

In Windows 10 terms that would mean you'd need .NET version 3.51 to be switched on with the Turn Windows Features On option, as per TairikuOkami's screenshot above or this tutorial:
Windows Features - Turn On or Off in Windows 10

Ignore me if you've already done all this...

Thanks for the input, but it isn't relevant cause the game requires 4.6. The only other specific thing the game requires is Visual C++ Redistributable for Visual Studio 2015 x86, which I've installed and reinstalled to see if that was the problem. Any way I can check to make sure the game is using this specific version of C++ cause under Programs & Features I have a bunch of other C++ versions.

  8. Net Framework Reinstall Problem

4.6 is an update to 4.5, rather than a standalone version, which could be installed separately, once installed over 4.5.
NET Framework Repair Tool is currently supporting version 4.6.1, but the latest is 4.6.2 (might not work properly).

I see, thanks. So if the .net framework repair tool is sending me that log file does that mean my 4.6 version is corrupt or not working correctly? Or does that mean the repair tool doesn't know how to fix it?

  10. The log you have posted only shows, which files were uncompressed during setup, you need to check each log file and look for errors, particularly:

    C:\Users\Woody\AppData\Local\Temp\FixDotNet.log
    C:\Users\Woody\AppData\Local\Temp\NetFxSetupEvents.txt

I looked through those two files and am a bit confused. I'd post the results but they're pretty long, is that ok?
