Windows 10: Network In Safe Mode Not Working

Is there a service or componet service or some other thing that can be toggled off or on that would cause Safe Mode with Networking to stop? I upgraded from W7 to W10 (early August) with a desktop and the W10 Safe Mode with Networking worked until a few weeks ago (first of November more or less). I am wired and have not used WLAN as it is not even configured nor do I have the hardware for it, so that eliminates wi-fi. Before I could boot to Safe Mode with Networking and it would default to the W10 page now I get the 'oh snap' error message.

Although in the beginning when SMwN worked it would show the icon with a red X and still was able to connect and recently it has just stopped all together. Anyone have an idea on what would cause this feature to stop working? sfc /scannow + DISM can't seem to find any errors. System Restore doesn't repair it either.

I try to boot into safe mode with networking.

I have an external USB 3 connected ethernet adapter and an internal wireles NIC.

In network connections the external adapter is invisible. The Ethernet NIC has no drivers loaded

Please advise.

I have a wired desktop (no WLAN at all) and after upgrading to W10 from W7 (July 2015) I was able to connect to the internet using Safe Mode with Networking. Around the 1st of November that function stopped working. I am able to connect in regular mode but from time to time need the Safe Mode with Networking to do various things.

I just recently (last 36hrs) did a W10 'refresh' using the W10 install media hoping that may resolve this issue but sadly it did not. Still unable to connect in Safe Mode with Networking (while in that mode it does show an internet connection in Network and Sharing) but will not connect, could there be a setting in Services that I may have missed or some other similar thing that could've been toggled off by chance?

 

Networking is not supposed to work in Safe Mode for a reason. That is why it is called Safe Mode.

 

Both of the original posts clearly state safe mode with networking.

Yes for different reasons why you use them. Safe mode is meant to be used for troubleshooting, not for connecting to a network.

Even in Safe Mode w/networking, you are still limited in what you physically can do.

 

All true.. but would like to know why the networking part would just up and quit after it worked previously and by that I mean it worked for three months (Aug-Oct) then stopped in Nov. Am well aware of the usages of Safe Mode... just curious as to this particular thing and how to reconcile it. Never had an issue with it in 2000 or XP or W7.

 

Check your Updates, see what new ones have been installed recently. Most likely one of them icaused the problem.

 

thats a good point but haven't had but two updates other than Windows Defender updates but knowing MS they slide stuff on ya through those 'security' updates.

 

looking at the updates I have none go back to the date when the issue started....they're all after the fact..hmmm.

 

Upgraded via updates to version/build 10586 and the issue still exists. I am of the impression there is a 'permission' thing somewhere as the issue was inherited from the previous build. I even went to msconfig select BOOT select Safe Mode and check NETWORK and it still ignores the command. Any more ideas? other than why do I use it?

 

There was nothing inherited. Safe mode is not for installing updates. It is for troubleshooting.

 

I must've not been very clear with the last post, either that or bro67 has some sort of dislike for Safe Mode with Networking. I did not update the current build through that method, I did it normally through the normal desktop; Settings> Update & Security Windows Update,recovery,backup. What I am saying is the new build also doesn't allow SMwN to work either. Prior to that I also did an 'inplace Windows 10 install/refresh' using an .ISO placed on a 2.0USB using the build released on July 29th.

As stated the SMwN did work for several months (three to be exact) then suddenly stopped working. My desktop functions normally thank goodness and haven't really had any other issues (other than a few 'pilot errors') I am here in hopes someone may know of a setting I may have over looked that may have been toggled off concerning SMwN. I can boot to SM and again the only issue is the Network part is a no go. Snide remarks about what Safe Mode is and how it is used is not what I am seeking. So let's don't waste each others time with those.
