  1. Network shares no longer visible in Explorer

I use the same Microsoft ID on both machines. I have (to the best of my knowledge) checked that all the settings for the shares on the two machines are the same.

I'm wondering whether it has something to do with the 15 day time limit, mentioned in a link in a previous comment, before SMB v.1 uninstalls itself. I can't remember whether I used SMB sharing on one of the machines within that time window. But it also looks, from reading that page, like the network browser is really a thing of the past and that I should use mapped drives instead. In that case perhaps the real question is how I can retire SMB v.1 on the other machine, rather than trying to keep it going on the one from which it has disappeared. I found the instructions in the link a bit hard to follow in this regard.

Bring up Control Panel > "Programs and Features" > click on the "Turn Windows features on or off" link on the menu on the left > go down the list to "SMB 1.0/CIFS File Sharing Support" and uncheck it to disable SMBv1.

Be aware that some other devices may default to using SMBv1. I found that my NAS disappeared after I uninstalled SMBv1 on my computers. I had to change to share protocol on the NAS to SMBv2.1 to bring it back.

  3. Thanks for that information. I'm glad I've got that security hole closed up now. It doesn't explain the difference in behaviour between my machines though, since they both had SMB v.1 enabled. Then again I've got file sharing working now between the two computers using mapped drives, so everything is good.

Again, thanks a lot everybody for your help!
