  1. network visibility / Function Discovery Resource Publication service

I have a laptop and a desktop both running Windows 10 Pro (Version 1909 (OS Build 18363.720)) and both sharing folders on my home network. The laptop is normally plugged in to AC power and is set to automatically turn off the screen after 30 minutes but never go to sleep.

If I have recently restarted the "Function Discovery Resource Publication" service on my laptop (see below), I can open Windows explorer on my desktop, click on the "Network" icon, and see my laptop listed under the "Computer" section. From there I can click on the icon and browse the laptop's shared folders.

My issue is that after a period of time, the laptop no longer shows up in the "Network" section of Windows Explorer on the desktop. I cannot figure out exactly when or why this occurs. It does not occur right after the laptop's screen powers off, but as an example the laptop still showed up in the list of network computers last night before I went to bed, but was gone when I opened my desktop computer 9 hours later. The laptop was still powered on with its screen off at this time.

If I run "services.msc" on my laptop, then go to the "Function Discovery Resource Publication" service and restart it, the laptop once again appears in the "Network" section of Windows explorer on the desktop after a refresh, even though the service status was already listed as "Running" before the restart.

The "Function Discovery Resource Publication" default "Startup Type" is "Automatic (Trigger Start)", but there doesn't appear to be a way to change the start type to just "Automatic", i.e. without a trigger. Having said that, I'm not even sure the trigger start has anything to do with my problem. Does anyone know how to solve this issue?

I suspect the behavior would be the same if I were to leave my desktop unattended for a period of time and try to access its shared folders from my laptop, but I'm only aware of the opposite issue because I primarily work from my desktop.

    :)

  2. Function Discovery Resource .Publication

    Hi Joshua,
I became aware of the problem several weeks ago when I could not find another computer on the local network. It had been working okay before. There have been no significant changes that I know of.
I found an article that said I should check if the following services are enabled and running: DNS Client, Function Discovery Resource Publication, SSDP Discovery and UPnP Device Host. All were running except for Function Discovery Resource Publication.
It was enabled (Automatic (Delayed Start)) but each time I tried to start it, I got the error message:

Windows could not start the Function Discovery Resource Publication service on Local Computer.
    Error 0x80004005: Unspecified error

I suspected this was the cause of not finding the computer on the network, but didn't know how to fix it. Yesterday I tried another tactic by going to Settings / Network and Internet / Status / Network Troubleshooter. It seemed to find a problem and correct
it, and then I was able to find the computer on the network by refreshing Windows Explorer. However Function Discovery Resource Publication was still not working. Today when I checked I found I could not find the computer again.
    Regards,
    Larry
