    Networking and the Black Arts - The case of the disappearing computers


    I have long considered computer networking to be a black art, and recent events have tended to confirm this opinion.

    Last week my home network comprised 2 PCs (my wife's and mine) and my laptop. Using File Explorer I could see each of these machines and and had full access from anyone to any other other one. They all happily co-existed and shared nicely.

    At the weekend, the laptop took umbrage and left. Won't speak to any of its mates. Today my PC can only see itself when I click on Network. My wife can see me but I won't let her have access!

    I appreciate that I have not given any sensible details for anyone to help solve the problem - just giving vent to my frustration. I know how to get it working again but why does this happen? Why do machines on networks suddenly disappear or change their access levels. Malware is of course a possibility but all machines are clean and I have good security, so unlikely to be the reason. MS updates frequently change things so that is my prime suspect.

    Home network has disappeared from network list


    I have two devices connected to my home wireless network, my phone and my laptop. Recently my network has disappeared from the laptop's list of networks. This did not happen with my phone, which works fine. By disappeared I mean my home network cannot be discovered by my laptop. This is not a connection issue because I cannot find the network to connect to. I do not have this problem with any other wireless network. I followed the various command prompts suggested by Microsoft's troubleshooting guide (http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/w...nection-issues). Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

    One computer cannot access other network computers.


    So I've tried every troubleshooting step I know:
    • Double checked that Net Bios was enabled
    • Ran a bunch of network commands:
      • flushed DNS
      • registered dns
      • pinged and located the named computers successfully
    • Reset my router to factory settings

    Nothing works when I try to access via explorer. I'm still baffled by the fact that every other computer can access each other AND access this computer. It's just the outgoing connection from this machine that doesn't work.

    Any thoughts?
