Windows 10: Networking Issues, What Are My Windows 10 Networking Credentials?

Ok, just upgraded to Windows 10 this week and been bashing my head bloody for two days on networking issues. What on the green Earth are my networking credentials in Win10? I have a Microsoft account I'm logging into Win10 pc with (which I hate but besides the point), everything is asking me for credentials, and I put in the email address and password I log into Windows with and it doesn't work. I have a network with a workgroup and homegroup set up, and my Win7 pc and Win8 pc have no problems talking to each other but My Win10 can't access the win7 pc, though it accesses the Win8 pc just fine. I also can't access a WDMyCloud on my network, it keeps asking me for Windows credentials and nothing I put in works, it does not like the email address/pass I use to log in to Windows 10 either. I'm literally stumped. Can someone help me out?

If all your accounts have passwords, the following worked for me:

Try setting power management on your NIC to always on.

Device Manager > Right click your NIC > Power Management.

 

Internet slow loading

I’m using a 4G network internet service. But when I use the network in my windows 10 laptop it works slowly. I have used the same network service on other laptops with windows 8.1 and windows 7 but there was no issue. So does windows 10 is affecting my
data speed. What should I do?

I didn't think the video was boring at all *Smile lol. Thanks for posting and trying to help. I'm still confused on what I have to do to get my Win10 and Wn7 pc communicating however. Let me give some details, because my stuff looks like a mess to me, so I'm not even sure it's set up right.


I am currently logging into Windows with my Microsoft account (which I guess is my username?) On the login screen it has the big round pic, my first and last name ("Gina Lastname" from here on out), my email address, and I input my MS account password. I'd prefer to just show my first name, but MS account won't let me do that.

I have a folder in my C:\Users named just "Gina", but on the desktop there is a shortcut to that same folder called "Gina Lastname"


In the netplwiz window that comes up, I have no user called "Gina", but two that are "xxxxx@email.com", which looks like the Microsoft account. I have none that are "Gina Lastname"


My Win7-PC will connect to my network-shared folders on my Win10-PC just fine, but it won't work the other way around. When I try to access the Win7-PC shared folders from Win10-PC, I get this error:


Network Error
Windows cannot access \\WIN7-PC\HusbandName
You do not have permission to access \\WIN7-PC\HusbandName. Contact your network administrator to request access.

My Win8-PC can access Win7-PC just fine, and vice-versa.


Win8-PC and Win10-PC talk as well. On my Win8-PC, when I go to share a folder, I can right click > Properties > Sharing Tab > Share Button, and from there I can choose "xxxx@email.com (xxxxx@email.com)", which I'm guessing is my Microsoft account?, as the person to share with. The Win7-PC has no such listing.


I am also trying to decide if I want to do Network Sharing or Homegroups. I actually want to share whole user folders (everything) not just Video, Music, etc that you get with Homegroups) between all pc's. And I don't want my family, upon joining the network for internet access, to see aaallll my whole User accounts folders, and just share certain folders, like music or videos, etc. I'd like to not need a pass for any of it, or at least not have to put a password in each time for the three main pcs on the network.


Do I have to make a new user for my Win10-PC like you show at about 7:50 in your video or do I have a whole other set of problems?

Please answer just these questions, we'll go from there:

• Do you have a user account on that Windows 7 PC?
• If answer to 1. is Yes, when you sign in to that PC can you access shared folders (on other accounts) on that PC?

 

No, I do not have my own user account on the Win7-PC. I's my husband's pc and I'd prefer not to have my own account. My Win8-PC accesses his pc just fine. My Win8-PC has only my user account.

 

I am testing something, want to be sure it works before posting. I'll be back within 20 minutes.

 

OK, this works, tested it now on a Windows 7 machine. I am now assuming the shared folders on your husband's Windows 7 PC should be shared with everyone on your home network with full rights.

Ask your husband to stop sharing any folder he is now sharing from his Windows 7, then share it again with these two commands in an elevated (administrator) Command Prompt.

First:
Code: net share AnyName=X:\SharedFolder /GRANT:Everyone,Full[/quote]
AnyName = Any name he wants to use, the name you will see as share name when you browse the network
X:\SharedFolder = Full path (drive:\foldername) of the shared folder

Next:
Code: icacls X:\SharedFolder /grant:r *S-1-1-0:F[/quote]
The first command shares a folder with everyone on your network, the second one adds so called NTFS rights to everyone; each user on any Windows PC has a called SID, security identifier, the one we used here (S-1-1-0) means "all users" or "everyone".

That's it. You should now be able to see the share AnyName when browsing the Windows 7 PC on network .

Four times happily divorced myself, I know how reluctantly we men take tech advice from our wives. If he has doubts to remove shares and do the above just because you ask it, ask him to test it first with a new share sharing a nonsense folder *Wink.

I tried this. With these commands:

NET SHARE HusbandName=C:\Users /GRANT:Everyone,Full
icacls C:\Users /grant:r *S-1-1-0:F

After each command it said successful. I still get the same network error when I try to access the shared folder on my Win10 PC.

\\Win7-PC\HusbandName\HusbandNameUserFolder is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions.
An unexpected network error occurred.

What looks weird to me is that under His computer name under Network in File Explorer, there is the HusbandName, then I have to click on that, then the C:\Users folders Default, Husband, and Public come up. I can access Public and Default. HusbandName, which is what I want to access most, throws the error. My Win8-PC once again, accesses just fine. His PC can access any in the network.

I will do some tests on my network, will post back. I hope that you have realized this is a site based on volunteer participation, my next reply might not come as soon as you'd like to because the real life is keeping me quite preoccupied today.

 

Of course!! I appreciate your time. I was thinking back and I had this issue before the Win10 upgrade I believe. I was needing the transfer a very large file to his computer, too big for a cd or even our usb sticks we have lying around, and decided to let it go overnight over the network. I went to transfer to his C:\Users\HusbandName folder, but it wouldn't let me in, so I had to use his Public folder. I didn't remember it until today. I was using software that was installed on this computer when it still had windows 7. It's not even installed on my upgraded computer So it's not necessarily w win10 problem. Hmmm.

I have tried to share another random folder on my husband's PC. I shared it the same way as the folder I can't access (by right clicking the folder and sharing through the Properties, not by command line). I can access that folder just fine. It's something particular about his userfolder that is the problem.

 

Yes, I think that is the case.

I have now tried everything possible to get sharing to fail, can't do that! Especially sharing and setting rights with those NET SHARE and ICACLS commands works every time.

A suggestion to your husband: create a new folder, share and set rights with NET SHARE and ICACLS commands, copy the full content from the problem folder to the new folder, test if sharing works then if yes, delete the original.

 

Okay, well I have tried a few things since last post.

I took all sharing off the users folder. I think I was sharing \Users and \Users\HusbandName and maybe something was conflicting. Went through all folders within and unshared by unchecking Shared checkbox. Then I right clicked on Users and put Everyone, Full. Voila! It worked...HOWEVER now my husband's PC cant see MY Users\MyName folder!

FACEPALM!!! Oy. I removed him from the homegroup and readded. Nope, still didn't work What the heck? Any ideas? LOL. Thank you.

My Win8-PC is happily accessing everyone, watching from the sidelines, wondering what is the matter with my Win7-PC and Win10-PC.
