It may not matter. I believe that the DIMMs all need to be of the same capacity for quad channel operation.

(I wouldn't be deeply shocked to find that's not correct, though.)

You may not find this helpful, but if you could get another couple of 8GB DIMMs and throw them in for quad channel, why not? (This assumes that the RAM would be compatible. That's not guaranteed. I bought my RAM in quad channels kits.)

Thanks, but I already have the two unmatched pairs.
What is the best way to install them together within my available mobo and sockets?

Just wondering if that 800 MHz Ram is actually DDR3 1600 MHz and it was assumed to be 800 because of the GPUz readings.

To add for ASUS, my latest M52_M32 has 4 black slots labeled as A1, A2, B1 and B2. Putting 2 modules in A1 and A2 work as Single Channel, putting the 2 modules in A1 and B1 work as Dual Channel. Just goes to show there could be issues in assuming how things go together hence the need for the manual. My 2 Gigabyte boards have 2 slots of black and 2 slots of blue, alternating. All 3 boards AMD-based, Intel-based boards may be different. Or as frequently like to say on the 'net and texting, YMMV.

They're pretty old, so I am assuming they are 800MHz, and the BIOS says so too.

Anyway, I guess I'll just have to try different configurations and see what works.

Could find again depending on the motherboard it will reduce the speed to the lowest speed as in 800MHz, I seriously wouldn't bother, 16GB is plenty for most purposes. Generally it's accepted that mixing Ram speeds is not a good idea, if it even works!

New 1600MHz RAM runs at 800MHz

That's what I was thinking. OP can look at the sticker on the RAM module and 800 RAM would say PC3 6400 while 1600 would be PC3 12800.

EDIT: Just proved myself wrong. There were 144 pin 800Mhz DDR3 6400 RAM modules made for HP LaserJet printers. https://www.amazon.com/HP-144-pin-DD...language=en_US

RAM not running at correct speed.: In my UEFI BIOS I set my XMP Settings for my DDR4 RAM to run at 2133mhz (note this is not overclocked) and Windows Task Manager shows it is running at 1067mhz, this is extremely problematic because I have a Ryzen 5 1600 CPU and Ryzen is better with fast RAM speeds. Replacing 1333mhz RAM with 1600mhz: If the motherboard only supports 1333, why would you buy and install 1600 ? According to the above specs it supports 8GB of 1333.
