Windows 10: New Cloudflare 1.1.1.1 fastest, privacy-first consumer DNS service

My understanding is when you tell the LAN settings to "Obtain DNS automatically", it uses whatever is set in the router. Manually entering Cloudfare or Google or others takes precedence. I think....*Smile

 

I checked out the speed of DNS servers 1.1.1.1 & 1.0.0.1 using the Gibson DNS benchmark. The default Virgin Media DNS address for my cable Ethernet connected desktop PC to Virgin Media's fibre broadband is much faster and 1.0.0.1 is faster than 1.1.1.1.

 

WOW! Have been using the Google DNS for years. This is incredibly faster for day to day browsing and Netflix. Thanks guys!

As far as I know Router setting over-rides windows setting anyway forcing connected devices to use Router configured DNS

On another note:

 

Big improvement over Verizon FIOS Gateway.

 

It shouldn't. I can't change DNS on my (ISP supplied) router as they have locked it. The ISP can of course do whatever they want but this test shows that at least in my case the settings in Windows has overridden the router settings (as it should).

Tested router configured to use Cloudflare DNS and changed network adapter settings in windows to use Google DNS and got the same result as you so now I wonder what is the point of router DNS?

Using the router instead of the setting in Windows is a set it once and all connected devices will use the same DNS settings.

 

The only way my router can give me DNS is if I turn my PC IP settings to automatic for DNS. If I do that with Cloudflare set in the router, it gives me Cloudflare as the first two DNS and then adds in the ISP DNS under them. Even testing like this, my DNS comes back as Cloudflare with no issues. My router is a modem/router combo in one device from my ISP.

I can see the same on my android using Chrome testing for DNS (Cloudflare, no issues).

I have the router and my PC both set with Cloudflare and it works great.

I found Cloudflare was slower than my Virgin Media default DNS connection using the Gibson DNS benchmark. Site What's My DNS Server? shows the default Virgin Media DNS server when DNS settings are set to auto and a Cloudfayre DNS server when I use DNS servers 1.1.1.1 / 1.0.0.1

 

A few programs alert on it but really they are just detecting non standard configurations or non default settings. Then it's down to the user to make a choice.

I guess that as Cloudflare DNS is new it will take a while before it gets whitelisted in security software definitions databases.
