    New computer: transfer license

My antique pc died today and I'm now working on a new HP Pavilion which came with Win 10 Home. I have a recent iso DVD of Win 10 Pro and plan on installing it. How can I transfer my license?

  2. Windows 10 deactivated itself

Transferring your license depends on how Windows 10 was originally configured on your computer.

If its a full retail store bought license online or offline, it is transferable to a new computer or motherboard.

If its the free upgrade from a retail store bought Windows 7 or Windows 8 license, it is transferable to a new computer or motherboard.

If its the free upgrade from a OEM preinstalled Windows 7 or Windows 8 license, it is NOT transferable to a new computer or motherboard.

In your case, you need to purchase a new full license.

Unfortunately, changing the motherboard will invalidate the license.

If its a full retail store bought license online or offline, it is transferable to a new computer or motherboard.

Do you have a 10 Pro key?

If not, were you running version 1607 or later and logging in with MS account.

Do you still have old hdd - you may be able to extract 10 Pro key from it?

Old hdd says need formatting, so I think it's dead. I think I do have a product key somewhere; I'll look for it.

Found a key. But it's from 8/15 and may be superseded. Won't know until I try.

Product keys don't expire with time. They do get blocked from overuse, though.
