Windows 10: New conversation experience for Yammer Mobile on iOS and Android

Yammer mobile iOS and Android apps keep you connected from anywhere - driving employee engagement and participation across the entire company. Earlier this year, we announced a preview of upcoming changes to the mobile experience, and now, Yammer’s superpowers are getting even stronger. Here's a look at how we’re building beautiful new mobile experiences to help you connect, discover, and share in a way that's easy on the thumbs and the eyes.

New Conversation Styling

A new card-based design sharpens content in the feed and helps you focus on the discussions that matter most to you. This is combined with a refreshed icon set, additional fonts and typography, new color palettes, and smoothed out spacing & indentations that create a delightful interface and encourages effortless scanning and comprehension.

We’ve also rebuilt the threading architecture to highlight interesting and relevant conversations and moved some additional message details to keep the focus on the main card. You can now find these message details, such as poster name, details, group, & list of participants, under the Action-sheet for iOS and Bottom-sheet for Android apps.

Replies that Pop

A new bubble layout organizes replies for mobile allowing the user to read more as desired. Similarly, we’ve added a “Read more” option in the feed to see additional conversations and expand threads.

Immersive look at images & files

The new grid view for images and documents makes it easy to preview and engage with multiple images and/or files while scrolling.

Link Previews

Link Previews captures image and text previews from almost any website. Additionally, links are now clickable directly from the feed cards so that you can get to the content you want to access faster.

Inline Videos

Videos in feed can now be played on the go with new inline video playback. Stream videos can also be played inline on iOS.

Many of these changes have already rolled out and some more are rolling out this week. New features and new look for Yammer mobile on iOS and Android

Yammer's mission is to “empower and connect every person across an organization to maximize their impact.” We want to bring this experience to our users wherever they are, so we're working to create a full-featured mobile app with a sleek user experience. Here are some of the improvements that we have shipped recently and a peek at what's on the horizon.

Core mobile improvements

A new look for mobile

We're excited to share a new landing experience that takes you right to your feed so you can get caught up on what’s happening across your network, just as it works on Yammer’s web client.

Currently, the feed on mobile is a combination of All Company & people you follow. We are evolving the feed experience and will keep learning from the changes we are rolling out.

The Iconic change

Our Office App Logos have been recently redesigned to embrace the new world of work and signal the tremendous product value that has been delivered. Our new Yammer logo change has been in line with this vision and we've rolled out the new Yammer logo for mobile to reflect our modern app journey.

User Friendly Feeds and conversations

We have reduced visual clutter and improved information hierarchy & structure to help you get caught up on conversations across your company, faster.

We have also evolved our font, colors, and iconography to provide a more friendly look. We are currently testing these features which you may see in the app. Stay tuned for more details as we start rolling this out.

Improved readability

Live Events available on iOS and Android

To enable leaders to communicate broadly to their company or bring members of a community together around an event, we now support participation in a live event across iOS and Android.

Question and answer

We have started rolling out community and knowledge features starting with question and answer capability on iOS and Android. Users can now ask questions and solicit answers either in a Yammer group or during a Live Event. The author or admin can then select the best answer from the list of answers.

Yammer-to-device Push Notification encryption.

Your security is important to us. We have prioritized making your data more secure by encrypting push notifications all the way from our servers to your phone for both Yammer iOS and Android apps. Learn more here.

Yammer in EU

As we announced in May 2019, in-geo data storage is now available to European Union Yammer customers. For new Yammer networks in the EU, files attached to messages will be stored at-rest in Microsoft’s EU data centers. This is also supported on mobile.

Additionally, we have been working hard to bring all core product features to the mobile app, so you can engage the way that you need while on the go. Here are just some of the many new features launched recently on mobile.

Group Search on iOS

Search is critical and saves you time. We've extended search capabilities in groups. You can now search for conversations, files, and members directly within the context of a group to find information quickly.

Pinned Resources & Files on iOS and Android

You can now view your pinned links and group files through the group page on iOS and Android.

Pin links and files to the group in the app

Seen Counts on iOS & Android

You can now see how many users have read a post on mobile, too.

Seen counts are available on iOS today and we have started rolling this out for Android.

Windows Phone apps Skype for Business, Teams, and Yammer discontinued

Windows phone apps for Skype for Business, Microsoft Teams, and Yammer are retiring on May 20, 2018

Summary

Effective May 20, 2018, the Windows Phone apps for Skype for Business, Microsoft Teams, and Yammer will be retired. Starting on that date, these apps will no longer be available for download from Microsoft Store, and Microsoft will no longer support them.

While Microsoft continues to support Windows 10 Mobile, we are not focused on building new features for the system. We will continue to invest in the Skype for Business, Microsoft Teams, and Yammer mobile apps for iOS and Android, and also in desktop apps for Windows and Mac.

Moving forward, Windows Phone users will have the best experience by using Skype for Business, Microsoft Teams, and Yammer in the mobile web browser.

More Information

How does this affect me?

After May 20, 2018, the Skype for Business, Microsoft Teams, and Yammer apps for Windows Phone will no longer be available from Microsoft Store. Existing users will have the following experience:

Skype for Business and Yammer apps may continue to work, but we can’t provide any guarantees. These apps will no longer receive updates or support.

The Microsoft Teams app will no longer work, and users will receive an error message when they try to connect.

What do I have to do to prepare for this change?

Going forward, Windows Phone users can connect to Skype for Business, Yammer, and Microsoft Teams by accessing them as follows:

Skype for Business: We continue to invest in the Skype for Business mobile apps for iOS and Android, and also in desktop applications for Windows and Mac.

Microsoft Teams: Users can access Microsoft Teams by using the mobile browser.

Yammer: Users can access Yammer using the mobile browser.

Today, we’re rolling out exciting updates to Outlook for iOS with recognizable avatars and optimized swipe and scroll usability that reflects the continuation of our design-driven journey and helps you connect, organize, and get things done. We’ve been meticulously tailoring both Outlook for iOS and Android, making it faster than ever to achieve your goals and maximize your time while on the go.

Design is becoming the heart and soul of Office, something reflected in the Office 365 user experience updates announced this summer and the new icons we revealed last week. Outlook mobile will be among the first app to adopt its new icon, and, much like the entire Office 365 suite, design thinking and craftsmanship have been driving Outlook mobile forward. It’s a key reason why we’ve exceeded more than 100 million iOS and Android devices and our app store ratings are consistently above 4.5.

Great mobile experiences don’t just shrink desktop designs, they rethink the process by understanding mobile’s unique design opportunities and constraints. Unlike a desktop, our phones live with us in our pockets and purses. This proximity and immediacy create the need for more personal, efficient, and even playful experiences that require a mobile-first approach.

Quality and delightful craftsmanship

Great experiences are felt as much as they are seen. When we craft them, we pay attention to the details that make Outlook mobile feel faster.

With the new design in Outlook for iOS, we’re introducing new sensory feedback to create a resonant experience with the device cradled in your hand. When you swipe right or left on an email, subtle changes in color, shape, and iconography unfold. The corners of the message transform from hard-edged to soft and round, metaphorically pulling that item away from the message list and sending it where you want it to go—with haptic feedback.

Delight is brought to you through moments that happen within milliseconds, like the new animated calendar icon that fans forward or backward as you scroll through your agenda, or the instant insight provided in your inbox by signaling a potential meeting conflict. This craftsmanship makes Outlook mobile a gratifying, powerful experience as you quickly move on with your day.

Fast and focused

The first thing most will notice as we roll out the Outlook for iOS changes over the next few weeks is the bold color that creates a more vibrant experience. We recognize that people use many apps on their devices and quickly switch between apps to complete tasks.

A strong app header with bold color and typography helps you easily find your way to Outlook while rapidly switching between monochromatic apps to quickly complete your task and get back to what matters. The experience is consistent across mobile email, search, and calendar; and for those who use Outlook on a large screen, the blue header connects you to your familiar inbox and calendar no matter which Outlook you use.

As a native app, we embrace the native font and use of typography, so Outlook feels perfectly at home on your device of choice. The bolder, larger iOS typography, however, shouldn’t compromise the experience, which is why as you scroll on your iPhone and iPad, the size of the header is dynamically reduced to maximize your message list to view and find what you’re looking for.

Contextually relevant

With the new iOS refresh, we improved the usability of more core experiences. The Focused Inbox toggle and message list filtering experience now orientate you to your content and accounts in a way that provides clarity and confidence.

If you’re a single account user, the app is personalized with your avatar. If you have multiple accounts and calendars added to the app, new account icon cues help you easily switch between them. Bright, bold avatars are also added to your contacts, so you’ll instantly recognize senders in the message, top contacts in search, and attendees in meeting invites.

In addition, did you know you can schedule an event when you know your team’s availability without typing a single letter? When designing the scheduling experience in Outlook mobile, we brought forward all people, dates, and place elements required into context so you could simply slide the options around the calendar to quickly find the time and place that works, no typing required. Through iterations on both iOS and Android, Outlook mobile delivers a powerful experience that helps you achieve your goals and save you time—so you can get back to what matters in your day.
