  1. New disks being flagged as bad while building RAID 5

New disks being flagged as bad while building RAID 5 DhXQQj-P8jcT_pNSIhv-l-NfwJrpdPSoFBep4zCjDrg.jpg

Got three new 8TB HDDs. These three disks keep getting flagged by the Intel RST app when it tries to initialize the disk array. I'm not too sure what's going on here but the second disk was flagged as failed a couple times then it's switched to flagging the first disk as failed. Are at least two of these three disks bad, or is something else going on? It seems to be a random amount of time into the init process for the array where it flags as failed. I did notice a correlation between the disk being marked as failed in RST and the SMART count of command timeouts incrementing.

That 4th 8TB is a much older drive, initially was doing a 4 disk array including it.

I don't really care about the fragility of RAID 5 for massive disks, these drives are just being used to store torrents. I just want a bunch of local storage so I can decommission my seed box. In fact just thinking of ignoring the RAID altogether and spreading my torrents across the disks, if I can figure out if there's a problem with the disks or it's just a problem with Intel RST.

Before I switch to a Storage Spaces based disk array, or just using the individual disks, what should I check to know if I should be looking at RMAs for these disks?

    Would raid 5 be right?

raid 5 one drive can fail. with any number of disks.
your onboard raid 5 is equal to all of the crappy cards people are suggesting.
i would use your onboard or splurge for a hardware RAID controller. that will be around 300$ though.

  3. How do I format a single raid 5 hard drive?

I'd like to know how to format a single former raid 5 hard drive

If I boot up without the other raid 5 drives then Windows doesn't see it; it doesn't appear in Disk Management, or whilst booted into the Windows installation in DOS.

See below for more information on the set up I'm currently running.

I have a HP Proliant N40L Microserver running a raid 5 using Windows 10 Storage Spaces. There are a total of 4 hard drives in the microserver:

    • 750gb (Windows 10)
    • 3 x 2tb Western Digital Green

A few days after I set up a raid Windows 10 Storage Spaces flagged one of the hard drives as 'Retired' (unusable). The three Western Digital Green hard drives are brand new. However I replaced the hard drive causing the issue with a new one of exactly the same spec.

The raid rebuilt itself but after a day Windows 10 Storage Spaces flagged it as 'Retired'.

I'm not sure what's causing this issue. All the hard drives on the raid are new, and with the issue happening on a drive I only just replaced, I'm reluctant to blame the hard drives. Most of the components within the Microserver are new - apart from the Microserver itself.

I'd like to format the hard drive and attempt to rebuild the raid again, but Windows does not recognise the drive. If anyone has any advise I'd really appreciate it.

  4. New disks being flagged as bad while building RAID 5

Changing a hdd with raid 5 to NTFS

Hi Wayne. I'm Greg, an installation specialist, 10 years awarded Windows MVP, and Volunteer Moderator, here to help you.

Are the drives now plugged in internally? Are you wanting a single partition on each drive, as opposed to RAID with one partition spanning all drives?

Please post a screenshot of Disk Management, which I read like a doctor reads X-rays. Follow the steps here so I can see everything needed to advise you:

    http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/foru...

What are your exact storage needs? What was the RAID needed for and how has that changed now?

Based on your responses I'll have other suggestions.
