Windows 10: New Fluent Design Experience for Microsoft OneDrive Mobile apps

Work does not solely revolve around an office space. With Microsoft mobile apps, you can create and edit documents, scan receipts and business cards, markup and annotate PDFs, chat and co-author Office documents and share content with your peers across departments and with external clients and vendors outside your organization – directly from a mobile device.

Alongside Office Mobile apps and Microsoft Teams, our 4.5+ rated OneDrive mobile apps on iOS and Android empower you to stay connected to all files throughout Microsoft 365 from anywhere as well as capture and collaborate on the go.

Last year we announced that Office Fluent Design would expand to OneDrive for the web and align with the entire Office 365 suite on a common color palette, typography and icon systems. We introduced a shared header seamless across products, with elements thoughtfully aligned to focus on what matters. As we continued to roll out the Fluent Design system and the revamped Office brand icons, we also updated the file folder representation, unveiling golden folders across web and mobile.

Today, we carry forward this broad design overhaul to mobile and are excited to share the refreshed look and feel of the OneDrive mobile app. We, too, are updating how you work with recent files, annotate PDFs, link to files via Outlook mobile and more.

Well-crafted experiences are at the heart and soul of Microsoft OneDrive. With a focus on familiarity and ease-of-use, we’re bringing common experiences that align with the suite of Office apps along with subtle improvements to make finding and navigating files easier than ever.
Our bold new header adds a splash of color, more native feel, and alignment with Outlook on iOS. Microsoft Search is now integrated front and center, allowing users to find files faster.

Revamped look and feel of OneDrive on iOS

The files list has also seen unique, updates. The font sizes and colors have been updated to bring increased legibility and contrast to long lists of files – making it easier than ever for users to get back to their files.

Lastly, our command sheet, accessible from the “…” icon, has seen a refresh, bringing in a softer look and a draggable surface.

Quickly find the files that matter the most to you. OneDrive for Microsoft 365 makes it simple to get to your recent files easily across web, mobile, and Office.

We have improved the “Recent files” experience on the iOS and Android apps, making it consistent to the experience you see on OneDrive for the Web and Office endpoints. Uploaded scans and recently viewed PDFs are now automatically surfaced at the top of the “Recent” list.

New file picking experience in Outlook for iOS

With this update, we have rolled out a new and improved file picking experience to Outlook on iOS that lets you quickly and easily share files as links from across Microsoft 365. This OneDrive-powered file picker in Outlook enables you to share the files right from the email compose screen.

Now, when you share a file, you will be able to navigate and browse through a consistent and familiar “Recent” list of files, files and folders in your OneDrive, email attachments, as well as frequently accessed and followed shared libraries.

These files can now be shared quickly and securely with sharing links that comply with your organization’s sharing permissions.

New file picker experience in Outlook for iOS

Accomplishing tasks on your phone is easy and fast with OneDrive including annotating a PDF file to highlight items or add notes. The updated PDF editing experience for OneDrive on iOS is designed around quick actions that lead to a truly mobile first markup experience.

Pens, highlighters, and the eraser can now be found at the bottom of the screen, making markup more intuitive and touch friendly.

Notes are now more lightweight and reactive, making them easier to create and view. We’ve also made it simpler to customize and select note color by bringing the color picker into the note surface.

We’ve also made visual improvements to the signature feature by increasing the signing surface area, smoothing out the pen handwriting, and made it more intuitive to store signatures for future use.

These changes, too, will be coming soon for OneDrive on Android.

Revamped settings experience

We have improved the usability of our settings page for OneDrive on iOS so that the configurations are now more discoverable, simple, and accessible. Notification settings are now grouped by account in a single “Notifications page” so customizing according to specific preferences is more straightforward.

The settings for “Camera Upload” has been updated as well, to give users more control over aspects of the feature like choosing whether videos are uploaded and how photos are organized. And lastly, we’ve added a friendly question mark icon next to certain settings to provide additional context about that feature.

Microsoft Account Gets New Look With Fluent Design Update

Microsoft is refreshing the design for its web-based account management dashboard. The company previously showed off variants of the redesigned Account dashboard in concepts before, but it is finally rolling out the new design to Microsoft Account users.

The redesigned Account dashboard includes a big header section with all of your account’s important information, such as the number of devices you have, as well as your Microsoft Reward points. Everything else is listed afterwards in a grid-based UI where you can access the different settings for each item, such as your Microsoft Family settings, your subscriptions, devices, privacy settings, etc.

New Fluent Design and Intelligent features coming to OneDrive for Web

Over a billion people use Office every day, across different industries, geographies, and even generations. They trust our products to help manage everything from trillions of dollars of global business to their children’s homework.

Last year at the BUILD conference, Microsoft unveiled Fluent. It’s a new visual and interaction design system we created for Windows, Office and the Universal apps platform to deliver experiences that are adaptive, empathetic and beautiful across modalities.

Fluent Design is now expanding to the web and aligning the entire Office 365 suite on a common color palette, typography, icon systems and elevation styles. You’ll notice a shared header across products, with elements thoughtfully aligned to the same grid everywhere, and added depth, to focus on what matters.

We’re excited to announce that this concept includes OneDrive and will span across multiple devices to offer a unified experience across all platforms starting at the highest level, with the new Office icons we announced last week.

Reimaging the possibilities for the OneDrive experience

As we looked across the changes coming to the Office Suite, we spent a lot of time to ensure that within OneDrive we didn’t just bring a “cool new coat of paint” but, worked to bring timesaving features that could also leverage our powerful intelligence services. Our goal was to see how we could better help you to understand what has transpired since your last visit, what requires your attention as well as the ability to quickly pick up where you left off.

Recommended files

Leveraging Office’s new intelligent services, we’re pleased to introduce the new Recommended files feature. This view will help you get you to your files faster by recommending files to you based on how you work and how you collaborate with others. It also brings attention to important files relevant to you, that you may not want to miss.

File Card and an Inside Look on files

The file card in OneDrive and SharePoint provides a wealth of information at a glance. You can keep track of activity around a file and whether it has been viewed recently. You can also get deeper information like Key Points from documents and the average time to read. This information can help you make quick decisions about which content to read and how to best prioritize your day.

Recent View

We heard from a lot of customers that wanted a quicker way to continue with files they were just working on. Recent view allows you to see the files you have been recently viewing or editing and lets you to filter or sort based on last modified, sharing or activity by anyone you are working with internally or externally.

Activity and lifecycle signals

Another piece of feedback we have received is to make it easier to know what files have changed since your last session. The easier to read column will now inform users about unseen edits, mentions and comments. Files in list and tile views now feature prominent icon indicators near their filename to more clearly denote trending content, checked out files, or content that is protected by IRM, AP or MDM policies.

Full-fidelity shared libraries in OneDrive

OneDrive’s mission goes beyond your personal cloud storage, and it now connects you better than ever to all your files across Microsoft 365. Not only can you sync shared libraries from SharePoint and Microsoft Teams to your PC or Mac using OneDrive, you can now view shared libraries in OneDrive on the web with support for viewing file metadata.

Our initial capabilities include the following, but we don’t plan to stop there:

Viewing custom metadata, including custom column formatting

Sorting and grouping by custom metadata

Changing your file view to any previously saved file view

Using Attention view to quickly identify where required metadata is missing

Custom columns created in shared libraries from SharePoint will be visible in OneDrive.

These new changes will start to roll out in the coming weeks. They are the result of research and testing, trial and error and a lot of long days. Design is a journey, not a destination and you are on this journey with us.
