Windows 10: New laptop - Seagate expansion drive documents won't open

I hope someone can help.


I have a new laptop and am trying to open word documents from my Seagate Expansion Drive.


They were created in Word 2007 on my old laptop, however I have Windows 10 on my new laptop. The drive is password protected, however when I connect the drive to my new laptop, it doesn't ask for the password.


All the documents are now .xml documents and I'm unable to open them in word. I've tried to open the documents in notepad but it just shows a page of wingdings and states the files are encrypted.


Does anyone know what I can do, as I have a lot of files stored on the drive and no longer have access to my old laptop.

Cannot Access New Seagate 2TB Expansion USB 3.0 Drive


i just purchased a new seagate 2tb expansion usb 3.0 drive and no matter what i do i can not access it. when i first received it i plugged it in, open it once it showed up in pc, tried to copy files to it and was told to no disk in drive d, checked properties and they said 0 used 0 available. i opened partition wizard, wiped the drive, formatted, assigned name "universal two, and letter n and now when i click on it i get "please insert a disk into the drive". i think the below images below are pretty much self-explanatory. even thought disk management and partition wizard say it's drive n i still get "there is no disk in drive d. please try again. i'm completely out of ideas, please any ideas and or suggestions. thanks

I would suggest you to give permission to Seagate and check if the issue persists:

a. Right-click the Seagate for which you want to set permissions, click Properties, and then click the Security tab.

b. Click Advanced to open the Advanced Security Settings for <Object> dialog box.

c. Click Owner tab, click Edit. If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type your password or click Continue.

d. In the new Advanced Security Settings for <Object> box, in the Change owner to: field, select your User name, and Check the Replace owner on sub containers and objects. Click OK, repeat for remaining boxes. (If your User name is not listed click the
other users or groups button to add your account). Check in on all the boxes and provide them the read write permission.

Seagate expansion portable drive not recognised by Windows 10

Hi! I am having the same issue with windows 10 and my 3tb Seagate expansion. It shows up in my device list as an unallocated disc drive, I am trying to use it as a regular external hard drive to store my music and video. I am going nuts here because nothing
has worked so far, I had hoped that adding a drive would do the trick but no luck. FYI, This is a brand new hard drive. never used.
