New Microsoft Edge is rolling out to Windows 10 May 2020 Update

On January 15, Microsoft’s new Chromium-based Edge browser was officially launched. In January, the company also announced that it will roll out the new browser to Windows 10 users automatically via a standalone Windows Update.

For Windows 10 version 1909 (November 2019 Update), the new Edge browser is already available via Insider channels. Now, the gradual rollout for new Microsoft Edge is underway on Windows 10 May 2020 Update, the next feature update, which is scheduled to launch on May 28.

Microsoft is currently rolling out Windows 10 KB4559309 to install the new Edge browser on May 2020 Update (version 2004) PCs.

This appears to be the first phase of the gradual rollout and the browser is rolling out to a small group of users. The rollout will continue to expand to everyone with Windows 10 May 2020 Update in the Release Preview Ring.

To install the standalone package, a reboot is required. After the system reboot, Windows 10 automatically launches the new Edge browser.

It’s also worth noting that the new Microsoft Edge cannot be removed if you install it via the Windows Update.

After the launch of May 2020 Update, new Edge browser should become available for more consumers. Microsoft says Windows 10’s Enterprise and education users won’t get the browser automatically.

If you don’t want to wait for it to roll out automatically, Microsoft says you can always download and install the browser manually. Remember, if you install the new Edge browser manually, it will still replace the old Edge.

Microsoft’s new Edge browser is based on Chromium and it comes with all features of the Chrome browser. There are a few new features in Chromium Edge compared to the previous version and the new browser also has better performance, according to UL Benchmarks, the company behind the PCMark benchmarking tool.

According to the benchmark, Edge browser is 10% faster than the legacy Edge. In the benchmark, new Edge received a total score of 9,631, while the legacy Edge is lagging behind with 8,435 score.

  2. New install Windows 10 (issue solved)

It's good that you're not experiencing any issues. Unfortunately many folks are, a quick Google search will show the same info im offering the OP.

    Heres a couple examples:

    Here

    Here

It's basically what I mentioned above, small issues here and there ,but nothing to end your day.. for the most part.

I know it's anecdotal, but for my experience 95% of the time it's perfectly fine. The issues I've run into wouldn't be enough for me to roll back , but they would be enough (had I not installed it yet) ,to avoid it for another couple weeks which is why I'm suggesting it to the OP

Microsoft Rolls Out the Windows 10 Anniversary Update

Microsoft late Tuesday rolled out the Windows 10 Anniversary Update, marking 1 year in the market for the operating system, and with it, ending the Windows 10 Free Upgrade offer. The new update bears the internal version 1607, with build 14393. The update is several gigabytes in size, and effectively replaces your existing Windows 10 installation.

The update adds new features to Windows Ink, the stylus-based live notes app; Cortana, the voice assistant, which can now be accessed right from the lock-screen, and is integrated with even more apps; and Windows Hello, the in-built biometric ID system, which has been integrated with many more third-party services, such as Dropbox; improvements to Windows Defender, the anti-malware tool; and various under-the-hood improvements that increase performance and energy-efficiency (lower battery usage).

New Microsoft Edge is rolling out to Windows 10 May 2020 Update

Microsoft is developing a built-in ad blocker for its Edge browser

"One of the first browser add-ons many people install to improve their online experience is Adblock Plus or something similar. Until recently, Microsoft Edge's lack of support for add-ons put off a lot of would-be users, but reports from Build 2016 suggest that native ad blocking is on its way to the Internet Explorer successor.

Adblock Plus is coming to Edge, but built-in ad blocking would negate the need for such an add-on. A slide shown off and snapped at a Build presentation shows that the next version of Edge, in response to user feedback, will feature ad blocking capabilities. There's no word on delivery timescale, but the upcoming Windows 10 Anniversary Update would seem a likely candidate.

ZDNet's Ed Bott photographed the slide which shows Microsoft's development roadmap built around feedback from testers. Right at the top of the list is reference to plans to create a plugin and extension store for Edge, but it's entry number four that's more intriguing.

"Build ad blocking features into the browser" is listed as a Feature Request from users. But the good news is that it is not only listed as being "Deliverable 4682811", but as "Targeted for the next version".

This will no doubt come as good news for those who have fallen in love with Edge, but it's not something that will be welcomed by the likes of Adblock Plus. It does seem that, particularly in the mobile arena, there is a move to baking ad blocking into the browser so it makes sense that Microsoft is following the trend. But it is the fact that Edge straddles Windows 10 on the desktop and Windows 10 Mobile that makes this a particularly interesting move.

Keep an eye out for Insider builds in the coming weeks as the feature may be just around the corner.
