    Hi,

How does one "clone" a 1Tb HDD to a 240 Gb drive ?

    Cheers, *Wink

I think I see the point of your question as it's not then a clone right? if it's a serious question then you can resize "on the fly" as you set up the clone - I suspect, however, you know that, fdegrove. *Cool

    Hi,

Precisely. It was a bit of a "tongue in cheek" question. Lot's of people seem to use the words cloning and imaging without understanding what they actually mean.
Not pointing any fingers though, just sayin'.

Macrium has an option to clone from larger capacity drive to smaller capacity drive. Even though it says cloning but it actually perform copy.
From Macrium, set it as shown then Macrium will do "Copy" instead.

    Hi,

As said I was only bitching about the wrong wording. Seems even Macrium Reflect is sort of guilty of it although I fully understand why they differentiate between cloning (as in sector to sector copying which is the true sense of a clone) and "intelligent" cloning (which is a smarter way of copying what actually is present on the source).

Either way, not that important to most people I reckon.

    Cheers, *Wink

Just a small update as its a longer process due to work and getting time.
I've getting the ssd to show up and made it GPT.
Installed macrium reflect and created a USB rescue media, Ive then booted off the usb flash drive after changing boot order to usb first. But once booted back into the program Macrium reflect I dont see the main hard drive so dont have any system image to backup ?
    Sorry but I am trying

Do you have any external drive? This would be preferred approach. First make Image on external drive, then restore this image on new drive.

    1. Disconnect the new drive and leave the old one connected.
    2. Attach external drive, boot from USB stick and write the Image to external drive.
    3. Connect the new drive, disconnect the old one and restore Image from external to new one.
    4. Reconnect the old drive, select boot from new one and proceed.

Update I've now got system image moved into external drive which is a 250gb, the image said it was approx 68gb.
Booted from usb key browsed and picked the system image on the external harddrive then selected to restore option and selected the destination drive which is the 240gb ssd but when I press next I get a message saying the following. Not all copied, insufficient space.
So how does it copy to a 250gb hd at approx 68gb but not to a 240gb ssd ?

Recovering to a smaller partition should work (by dragging saved partition to a new one ), if backuped data is smaller than new partition.
How much disk space were used on old drive?

I just installed two SanDisk 240 GB Plus SSDs in two desktops. Installing Windows 10, putting back the applications and data took less than an hour on each computer. In the case of a new computer it would greatly simplify the task and you still have the original drive just in case there is an issue. Windows 10 handles SSDs with no problems.

So I need to drag partitions to the destination Ssd then resize all until they fit into area of ssd , when resizing should I always leave equal amount of space for each partitions.
Sorry but im not very pc savy thanks all for the patience

All but the partition with Windows on it (usually C: ) should be left original size. It's the C: partition that you'll need to shrink by selecting "Restored Partition Properties".

Of course, the limitation applies that: 1) The original DATA size on the source disk has to fit on the target disk (regardless of the compressed image size) and 2) try not to go over 75-80% full (recommendation varies across the web) for the target disk, otherwise some data relocation may be in order, lest you start having Windows or SSD performance issues.
