Windows 10: New Snapdragon 632, 439, and 429 for enhanced mobile experiences

Smartphone users have diverse needs, and Qualcomm Technologies has a suite of mobile platforms for all of them. That means device manufacturers can offer a range of cutting-edge choices from the entry-level 200 series to the premium 800 offerings. The Snapdragon 600 and Snapdragon 400 are two of our most popular tiers — not just for their high performance, but for the high value they deliver.

Since launch, our 600- and 400-level mobile platforms have powered over 1,350 and 2,300 mobile devices, respectively, from OEMs around the world. In fact, the technology meets the diverse needs of so many consumers and carriers around the globe that the list of smartphones powered by these new platforms reads like a who’s who of Android smartphone manufacturers.

Today at MWC Shanghai, we introduced upgrades to these already-popular tiers: the Qualcomm Snapdragon 632, Snapdragon 439, and Snapdragon 429 Mobile Platforms. Among the improved features and performance these new mobile platforms are designed to deliver are better battery life, significant power enhancements, more efficient designs, artificial intelligence capabilities, an impressive camera, and extraordinary graphics, compared to previous generations.

Here’s a closer look at the Snapdragon 632, Snapdragon 439, and Snapdragon 429, and how they’ll enhance the next generation of mid-level mobile devices.

Snapdragon 632

Our 600-tier is feature-rich, engineered to support some of the most sought-after mobile experiences — including some available from our 800 tier — how’s that for value? In a major upgrade from its predecessor, the Snapdragon 632 Mobile Platform brings a Qualcomm Kryo CPU, complete with four performance cores and four efficiency cores designed for fast web browsing, smooth user interfaces, and extended battery life. Its camera ISP supports up to 24MP for a single camera or dual cameras at 13MP each, giving OEMs multiple options for device design.

Snapdragon 632 provides significantly more power over the previous generation Snapdragon 626, with the addition of the Kyro 250 CPU, which boosts performance by up to 40 percent. And thanks to the Qualcomm Adreno 506 GPU, graphics on the Snapdragon 632 deliver stunning results on an FHD+ display, and render up to 10 percent faster, making games and videos load quickly and in brilliant colors.

A Snapdragon X9 LTE modem is integrated into the Snapdragon 632, supporting download speeds up to 300 Mbps. In addition to its power efficiency, the mobile platform supports 10+ hours of video streaming, 10+ hours of gaming, 8+ days of music playback, and 1+ days of talk time.

Snapdragon 439 and 429

Our 400-tier mobile platforms are designed to support day-to-day mobile experiences for mainstream smartphone buyers who want exceptional value. What sets the new Snapdragon 439 and Snapdragon 429 apart from previous generations is that they’re built on a more advanced FinFET process technology. This advancement is engineered to provide more flexibility and freedom to OEMs looking to add features and capabilities that can enhance their customers’ mobile experiences.

Additionally, the Snapdragon 439 and Snapdragon 429 raise the bar for battery life, with up to 25 percent less power usage and 25 percent higher performance. Both platforms also feature the Snapdragon X6 modem, which supports download speeds up to 150 Mbps, and Dual SIM Dual VoLTE voice and data connection.

The two new 400-tier processors also have their own unique improvements. The Snapdragon 439, for example, is equipped with an 8-core CPU, and its Adreno 505 GPU renders graphics up to 20 percent faster. The platform also supports a single camera ISP of 21MP, or dual camera at 8MP each, and can display photos and videos in Full HD+.

The Snapdragon 429 features improved power and performance over the previous generation — even for smartphones without all the bells and whistles. The platform has a 4-core CPU and an Adreno 504 GPU, for rendering graphics up to 50 percent faster. The platform enables a 16MP single camera, or dual cameras at 8MP each, offering a variety of lighting and depth modes for dynamic photos and videos.

Qualcomm Announces Snapdragon 710 Mobile Platform

Qualcomm Technologies, Inc., a subsidiary of Qualcomm Incorporated (NASDAQ:QCOM), has introduced the new Qualcomm® Snapdragon™ 710 Mobile Platform, built on 10nm process technology. The Snapdragon 710 is designed with highly efficient architectures for artificial intelligence, featuring a multi-core AI Engine and neural network processing capabilities. The Snapdragon 710 is the first mobile platform in the new 700-tier portfolio, designed to exceed what is expected from today’s high-tier mobile experiences by bringing select premium-tier features to a broader audience.

The Snapdragon 710 Mobile Platform provides new architectures, engineered to result in significant performance improvements over the 600-tier in the following areas:

AI: The new platform transforms the smartphone into a customized experience for users across camera and voice, powered by a multi-core AI Engine, delivering up to 2X overall performance improvements in AI applications, as compared to Snapdragon 660. Utilizing AI capabilities, the Snapdragon 710 makes it virtually effortless to capture and share contextually-aware photos and videos and personalize voice and speech patterns for more natural interactions. Through heterogeneous computing, the Snapdragon 710 Mobile Platform’s newly enhanced architectures, including the Qualcomm® Hexagon™ DSP, Qualcomm® Adreno™ Visual Processing subsystem and Qualcomm® Kryo™ CPU, are engineered to work harmoniously to run on-device AI applications quickly, intuitively and efficiently.

Capture: The new Qualcomm Spectra™ 250 ISP supports enhancements in capturing professional-grade quality photos and videos with superior low light photography, noise reduction, fast autofocus, image stabilization, smooth zoom and real-time bokeh effects. The Qualcomm Spectra 250 ISP is designed to deliver super resolutions with up to 32MP single ISP and 20MP dual ISP. Additionally, the AI Engine in the Snapdragon 710 supports smooth, speedy video style transfer, deep portrait modes and Face ID / Unlock with active depth sensing.

Display: The Snapdragon 710 features 4K HDR playback for viewing HDR videos and apps – also a first outside the premium 800-tier. The addition of 4K HDR playback brings greater brightness, wider color gamut and color depth to the Snapdragon 710, resulting in enhanced visual quality when viewing 4K HDR supported content over the most popular video streaming services.

Connectivity: The Snapdragon 710 features the new Snapdragon X15 LTE modem, a Category 15 LTE modem that supports up to 800 Mbps download speeds. It brings some of the most advanced 4G LTE technologies to the 700-tier, including 4x4 MIMO technology (on up to 2 aggregated carriers) for up to 70% faster download speeds in weak signal conditions, and License-Assisted Access (LAA) for faster speeds in crowded places, compared to phones that don’t support these features.

The Snapdragon 710 also offers an advanced suite of wireless technologies including cutting edge Wi-Fi features, Bluetooth 5, Qualcomm® Broadcast Audio and Qualcomm TrueWireless™ Stereo Plus to support wire-free listening experiences without wires between the left and right earbuds whilst delivering an enhanced user experience, including call voice in both ears, lower latency and longer battery life in the headset.

Performance and Battery: The platform’s new architectures are engineered to deliver superior power efficiency, long-lasting battery life and an overall enhanced user experience. Due to enhancements to the Adreno 616 Visual Processing Subsystem architecture, Snapdragon 710-based devices can expect to see up to 40% reduction in power consumption for both gaming and 4K HDR video playback, as well as a 20% reduction in power consumption when streaming video, when compared to Snapdragon 660. Additionally, the new Kryo 360 architecture, built on ARM® Cortex™ technology, is optimized to support up to a 20% overall uplift in performance, 25% faster web browsing and 15% faster app launch times, compared to the Snapdragon 660.

With the latest Qualcomm® Quick Charge™ 4+ technology, users can get a 50% battery charge within 15 minutes.

The Snapdragon 710 Mobile Platform is available today and is expected to be found in consumer devices in the second quarter of 2018.

Today at Computex, Qualcomm Incorporated (NASDAQ: QCOM) through its subsidiary, Qualcomm Technologies, Inc., announced at its press conference a joint effort with Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd to integrate the Qualcomm® Snapdragon™ 850 Mobile Compute Platform, featuring the cutting-edge Snapdragon X20 and Qualcomm® AI Engine in a future device. “Building on the portfolio of Always On, Always Connected PCs established over the past year, we are thrilled to work with Samsung to help offer consumers true mobility combined with the productivity and entertainment features of Windows 10,” said Alex Katouzian, senior vice president and general manager, mobile business unit, Qualcomm Technologies, Inc. “To truly expand this category, our work with mobile leaders like Samsung is important to help us deliver the next generation of Always On, Always Connected PCs to consumers.”

The Snapdragon 850 Mobile Compute Platform is designed to support many sought-after smartphone features in the PC and to stay connected to LTE or Wi-Fi so users can receive notifications and have their data virtually always synced on the go. The power-efficient architecture is engineered to support up to 30 percent system-wide increase in performance and up to 3X AI performance over the previous generation, as well as up to 1.2 gigabits per second LTE connectivity speeds and up to 25 hours of continuous usage or multi-day battery life under normal usage conditions*.

Meet the Snapdragon 835: a next-gen processor

Whether we’re VR gamers, budding photographers, or soccer moms, we expect our batteries to last. We expect our processors to handle new apps and games. We expect our cameras to take pro-level pictures and videos. In bad light. At a rock concert. We’ve come to expect a lot from our phones. We’re power users.

And as we embark on a new era of intelligent, connected experiences, our mobile devices are going to need a new, one-of-a-kind processor that’s smaller, faster, and more energy-efficient than any chipset in history.

Meet the Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 processor. Qualcomm Technologies’ newest mobile SoC is designed to meet every one of these rigorous requirements while setting new standards in mobile performance. Using a new 10nm design with more than three billion ultra-efficient transistors, Snapdragon 835 is 35 percent smaller than its predecessor, the Snapdragon 820.

This pivotal size reduction and efficiency boost allow device manufacturers to design thinner premium-tier consumer devices (smartphones, VR/AR head-mounted displays, IP cameras, tablets, mobile PCs, and more) with larger batteries that run on less power and last longer. All told, Snapdragon 835 is engineered to use 25 percent less power than the previous generation, which means huge battery savings.

With these architectural improvements comes more space on the Snapdragon 835 to deliver significant improvements designed to drive tomorrow’s mobile experiences: ultra-fast charging and multi-day battery life, jaw-dropping AR/VR immersion, the most advanced camera capabilities, gigabit LTE and multi-gigabit Wi-Fi connectivity, and inside-out security — all of it complemented by machine-learning solutions designed to make our devices stunningly intelligent.

Battery Life

This custom-built SoC is more efficient for today’s power user (read: all of us) who regularly streams music, uploads videos, takes conference calls, and plays VR games — sometimes all in a single day. There isn’t one type of processor for all applications, so Snapdragon 835 calls on the best components, including the Qualcomm Kryo 280 CPU, Qualcomm Adreno 540 GPU, and Qualcomm Hexagon 682 DSP, to manage separate workloads — all optimized by the Qualcomm Symphony System Manager to support superior thermals and long battery life.

Along with the new 10nm design, these multi-pronged, harmonized computing solutions bring unprecedented energy improvements. They include: more than one day of talk time, over five days of music playback, or over seven hours of 4K video streaming. Should the phone need more power, Qualcomm Quick Charge 4 is designed to provide five hours of talk time after five minutes of charging.

Immersive AR and VR

Snapdragon 835 builds on Qualcomm Technologies’ expertise in virtual reality solutions (for example, the Snapdragon VR820, which brings immersive virtual reality to mobile). Game-changing enhancements are at the core of Snapdragon 835, including immersive visuals, heightened sounds, and intuitive interactions, so what you see is now truly what you get. Designed to meet VR processing demands within strict thermal and power constraints, the processor offers 25 percent faster 3D graphic rendering and 60X more display colors when compared to the previous generation.

To generate true-to-life sounds, Snapdragon 835 supports 3D positional audio, superior SNR (Signal-to-Noise ratio), and native DSD format support for true high fidelity playback thanks to the latest Qualcomm Aqstic offerings. And for the most intuitive and comfortable user experiences on AR and VR, the new SoC is engineered to produce a 20 percent reduction, versus the Snapdragon 820 as implemented in the VR820, in motion-to-photon latency and six-degrees-of-freedom (or 6DOF) for precise, comfortable, and intuitive motion tracking. In addition, the processor supports Daydream, the Google platform for high quality, mobile VR.

All of these improvements are made possible by a heterogeneous computing approach that isolates different parts of Snapdragon 835 for audio, video, and motion functions, designed to deliver the best user experience and the most efficient processing.

Capture

The camera is an indispensable part of our phone and lives. To meet the ever-changing needs of power users and allow us to create new mobile experiences, Snapdragon 835 introduces improvements to mobile photography, and video capture designed to deliver smooth zoom, advanced autofocus, and true-to-life colors.

Snapdragon 835 features improved zoom and stabilization for photos and videos by developing highly optimized software algorithms designed to toggle intelligently between processing sub-systems like the Qualcomm Spectra 180 ISP, Hexagon 682 DSP, and Adreno 540 GPU to deliver a smooth zoom experience. Qualcomm Technologies’ newest generation of video stabilization software, EIS 3.0, is engineered to provide superior 4K video stabilization through advanced yaw, roll, and rolling shutter correction.

Major enhancements have also been introduced to auto-focus. New support for Dual Photodiode (2PD) and updates to our hybrid auto-focus framework are designed to bring intelligent phase and lighting detection to devices, to make sure that power users never miss another important moment because of bad camera focus. And Qualcomm Clear Sight is engineered to fuse together images for improved sharpness, noise reduction, and dynamic range.

Connectivity

Power users expect fast internet speeds. We want access to 360-degree VR video, cloud storage with speeds rivaling local storage, fast-caching of Hi-Fi music and movies, and the speed and convenience of instant apps — all without delays or quality degradation. Snapdragon 835 is designed to deliver each of these key experiences through the integrated Snapdragon X16 Gigabit LTE modem and support for 802.11ad multi-gigabit, as well as integrated 2x2 11ac MU-MIMO Wi-Fi, engineered to support a whole new class of experiences for power users, at home and on the go.

Supporting peak download speeds up-to 10x faster than first-generation 4G LTE devices, the Snapdragon X16 is designed not only to deliver peak download speeds that rival fiber optic cables, but also a more consistent user experience under a wider variety of signal conditions. The modem hauls in information with advanced 256-QAM digital signal processing, receives data on four antennas through 4x4 MIMO, and supports up-to 4X carrier aggregation.

On the Wi-Fi side, 11ad supports speed up-to 4.6 Gbps, extremely low latency, and up-to 5X lower power per bit performance compared to 11ac. The integrated 2x2 11ac MU-MIMO supports higher speeds even in crowded networks, and lower power consumption compared to its predecessor.

Additionally, Snapdragon 835 is the world’s first solution, supported through the companion WCN 3990 chip, to be certified for Bluetooth 5.0, improving overall speed, range, and capacity. This powerful combination of advanced LTE technologies as well as state-of-the-art Wi-Fi connectivity work together to support blazing fast speeds virtually anywhere you go. In terms of location services, Snapdragon 835 is engineered to deliver an up-to 30 percent improvement in accuracy for indoor navigation compared with Snapdragon 820, and up-to 50 percent reduction in power compared to traditional GNSS.

Security

Power users require advanced hardware- and software-based security because mobile devices contain personal and valuable information used for sensitive transactions. The Snapdragon 835 Qualcomm Haven Security Platform is engineered to support three layers of security — at the processor, device, and system levels. Haven uses PINS and fingerprints to authenticate the user interface and eye- and face-based security to authenticate the camera. At the same time, Haven runs device attestation on the software, apps and OS, and hardware. The end result is a security platform designed to authenticate both the user and the device continuously and thoroughly, helping protect the reams of new information and transactions taking place on our phones.

Machine Learning

Woven through these key five improved mobile experiences is Qualcomm Technologies’ machine learning platform. It’s designed to provide intelligent, on-device capabilities that utilize the computing strength of Snapdragon 835 to make our devices smarter. Real-world use cases include object recognition for better photos, real-time hand-tracking for immersive VR, voice recognition for a low-power virtual assistant, and biometric authentication that knows and protects users. These applications can make our devices smarter, more dynamic, and more useful.

With long battery life, immersive experiences, cutting-edge camera capabilities, and Gigabit Class download speeds, the Snapdragon 835 processor is supporting the phenomenal mobile performance power users need and expect.

The first announced Snapdragon 835 powered devices are ODG’s R-8, the company’s first consumer mobile AR/VR smartglasses for early adopters, and the R-9 for wide field-of-view (WFOV) experiences — from light enterprise to prosumer media consumption.
