Windows 10: New updates to Office.com and the Office 365 app launcher

Office.com is the URL for an experience that we’ve been building for a couple of years. We designed it to be your work hub experience and help you quickly get to the apps, tools, documents, and content you use on a daily basis. We’ve also brought intelligence into the experience that customizes the experience based on your activities.

Office.com includes the Office 365 app launcher, which opens when you click the app launcher icon. The app launcher, which in addition to Office.com is also available across the suite, is a menu of your Office 365 apps and services that makes opening and switching between apps easy.

We’re rolling out some changes to the way pinned applications work on Office.com and in the app launcher:

We’ve provided admin controls in the Azure Active Directory portal that enable admins with the Cloud application administrator, Application administrator or Global administrator role to pin up to three apps to Office.com and the app launcher. Any app added by an admin can be unpinned by the user at any time. Office.com and the app launcher are now one experience and will show the same set of apps.

There’s no need to manually pin apps to the app launcher because the system now automatically pins apps for you based on usage. Any app added automatically can be unpinned at any time.

In the previous experience, apps were removed after they were unused for a certain period of time. In the updated experience, apps will remain until manually unpinned.

We’re also rolling out a change that provides admins through the Azure Active Directory portal with the ability to group apps and customize the view of the Office 365 gallery. The Office 365 gallery enables you to explore and learn about available applications. This customization can be done via the “collections” blade in the Azure Active Directory admin portal. New Office 365 App Launcher

We are introducing a number of changes to Office 365 in the web to simplify and personalize the user experiences for you and your users.

The new Office 365 app launcher will be rolling out over the next couple months. Here's an early look on how it'll work so you can prepare the people in your organization for the change. The new app launcher is personalized and will help users open and switch between the apps they use most. The apps users see are still based on the licenses their admin has assigned. However, the redesigned main view now emphasizes the most used applications across Office 365. It also highlights additional apps relevant to your users. For example, teachers and students may see education-specific apps.

The video below will also show how www.office.com is an easy to remember URL to share with your users to help them get started with all things Office 365 and specifically, working with their online documents. We are also introducing a new Office 365 gallery page, accessible from www.office.com, that will help users better understand the apps, tools and services that are part of their Office 365 subscription.

Can I pin admin custom tiles to the main view of the launcher for my organization?

Admins will continue to have the ability to add custom tiles to share line-of-business (LOB) apps, sites, and URLs with their organization. However, they will only show in the main view if pinned by an end-user.

The All view is optimized for search and there's a new grouping at the top of this view called Admin selected apps for admin custom tiles so that users can easily discover them.

Will all my users see the same apps they do today?

With the new app launcher, a user's main view will include a default set of apps, plus any apps the user opened in the previous 45 days. From the All view, users can also easily pin any app, including admin custom tiles, to the main view of their launcher.

What happened to the Mail, Calendar, People and Tasks tiles?

Access to all Outlook modules is now consolidated in the main view of the app launcher with a single tile called "Outlook" that opens Mail. People, Calendar and Tasks can be accessed via the switcher in the lower left of the Outlook app, just like on the desktop. Direct access is also available via individual Calendar, People and Tasks tiles in the ALL apps view, and can be pinned to the main view of the app launcher like other apps. Additionally, if a user has clicked on Calendar, People or Tasks directly in the previous 45 days, we will automatically pin it to their main view.

Will my users' apps highighted in the main view keep changing based on their use?

After your users see the new launcher for the first time, apps in the main view will stay the same, unless a user chooses to customize their apps or an administrator adds or removes licenses. If you have difficulty finding an app, click All your apps and search or look through the alphabetized list of apps available.

Do apps open the same as they do today?

The apps in the launcher will open in different tabs, so a user should not expect the browser Back button to always take them where they were.

Introducing the new Office 365 App Launcher

As we continue to expand the great set of online productivity tools available to Office 365 users, we are committed to improving the experience that ties these services together. Today, we’re announcing a new version of the Office 365 App Launcher, which will provide improved discoverability to new and recently used apps, additional customization options and search across all the services and applications you use in the Microsoft Cloud. With one in seven people on the planet using Office, it’s important for us that this new experience feel familiar while also improving access to mission critical applications from across your organization.

New tabbed layout

The Office 365 App Launcher has always provided a simple, consistent experience to surface applications when and where you need them. Now, we’re taking this one step further and helping bring the apps you use most front and center.
The new tabbed layout allows you to pin and organize tiles in a “HOME” section to provide fast, familiar access to your favorite apps from your Office 365 subscription, the Office Store, Azure apps, SharePoint apps, Line of Business apps and even custom tiles added by organization administrators.

Your company’s recently added apps also get their own “NEW” section, with badge notifications to let you know when a new app is available. We’ve also brought the “ALL” apps page directly into the App Launcher experience to give you quick access to your entire catalog of applications and search from anywhere within Office 365.

Resize, pin and organize tiles

We also expanded the core functionality of the App Launcher to allow you to resize and organize tiles. These features mirror the familiar look and feel of the Windows 10 Start menu to make switching between applications as seamless as possible. To further enhance the speed at which users can multitask, you can continue to pin up to three applications to the right side of the navigation bar.

Support for Office 365 themes

The redesigned App Launcher now supports Office 365 themes, including your company’s custom theme. Simply select an Office 365 theme from the Settings menu and see the color scheme reflected throughout the new experience.

Coming soon—access to recent Office documents

We’re working hard on exciting new features for the Office 365 user experience. Over the coming months, you’ll see the ability to access your recent files from across Word, Excel, PowerPoint and OneNote Online simply by clicking the icon’s ellipsis menu. This will help you pick up from where you left off more efficiently.

Q. When will I see these features in my Office 365 environment?
A. Customers who have opted into First Release will see them later this month. Others will start to see the update in October.

Q. What apps will be available in the App Launcher?
A. The App Launcher will display apps from your Office 365 subscription, the Office Store, Azure apps, SharePoint apps, Line of Business apps and custom tiles.

Q. Will I be able to customize my App Launcher?
A. Yes, however only customers with Exchange will be able to pin, resize and customize tiles.

Q. Why can’t I see the new tabs?
A. Only customers with Exchange will see the tabbed layout.

Q. Can administrators customize the HOME section of the App Launcher on behalf of users?
A. Not yet. We are currently working to enable greater control for Office 365 administrators. Please check back soon.

Q. How do I get additional apps?
A. Additional apps are available from the Office Store.

A. Your organization’s theme will be reflected in the new App Launcher.
