  1. New Windows 10 install on older hardware crashes frequently

This post is a bit lengthy but please allow me to give an overview of the history.

I recently installed Windows 10 Pro on a machine which is very old, originally purchased in 2009 (specs below). Until this week it was still running Windows Vista as I didn't have the money to upgrade and it was acceptable for my needs. I knew for a while that the hard drive was failing and I had been experiencing frequent blue screens, restarts and freezing. I believed these issues were caused by corrupt data or similar. On Monday it finally died and wouldn't boot at all.

I replaced the hard drive with a brand new one and got a copy of Windows 10. The installation was fast and easy but unfortunately about 15 minutes after setup it blue screened. Since then it has blue screened or frozen several times a day as I've tried to identify the cause which was evidently not just the hard drive.

The crashes occur with no pattern I can see. It crashes often when opening Firefox. It crashed several times while attempting to install Teamspeak and World of Tanks. It crashed while attempting to download the latest driver for my graphics card. It crashes frequently when I'm just looking at settings. The weird thing is, I played World of Tanks for nearly 3 hours yesterday without it crashing once. This is exactly the same behavior I saw when it was when it was running Vista and it seems less prone to crashing when it's handling a more demanding task. Only smaller tasks cause a crash and every time the error code seems different.

I'm confident this isn't being caused by any additional software because it started happening immediately after a clean install of Windows. I understand that it may be caused by old hardware which is worn out and faulty. At the very least if I can determine for sure that's the case then I'll know. But I'm hoping it's something else.

    The specs of my machine:

OS: Windows 10 Pro 64 Bit
Motherboard: Foxconn N15235 G31MX (Not sure which numbers are most relevant)
    Processor: Intel Core 2 Duo E7500 2.93GHz
    RAM: 4GB
    Graphics: Nvidia GeForce 9600GT
    Sound Card: Asus Xonar DG
    Storage: 1 Seagate Barracuda 1TB
    Power Supply: 300W

So far I haven't been able to try a whole lot since it crashes so much that I get interrupted frequently. Windows believes all drivers are up to date. I have already tested the RAM using Memtest86 and no errors have been identified there. I cleaned everything when I was replacing the hard drive and at least on the outside everything looks to be functioning normally. I have tried numerous solutions by searching for specific error codes and nothing has worked so far.

Any suggestions would be much appreciated. I just can't afford to replace the whole machine right now.

    Thank you for your time.

    :)

Installing Windows 10 on New PC?

I'm going to be building a new PC on Christmas and want to install Windows 10 on it. I have Windows 10 on my current PC, which I installed upgrading from 8.1 with the files on a USB. How do I go about installing a clean copy of Windows 10 on this new PC? I think I recall something about installing it once makes Microsoft recognize your hardware, but since this will be a PC I'm not sure what steps I need to take. Do I need to go 8.1 -> 10 or is there a method of going directly to 10?

New Windows 10 install on older hardware crashes frequently

    Windows 10 Tweaks

Pressing “Windows+Pause Break” (it’s up there next to scroll lock) opens the “System” Window.

Windows 10: In the new version of Windows, Explorer has a section called Quick Access. This includes your frequent folders and recent files. Explorer defaults to opening this page when you open a new window. If you’d rather open the usual This PC, with links to your drives and library folders, follow these steps:

    • Open a new Explorer window.
    • Click View in the ribbon.
    • Click Options.
    • Under General, next to “Open File Explorer to:” choose “This PC.”
    • Click OK
