Windows 10: New Windows Terminal Preview v0.8 Release for Windows 10

The release of the Windows Terminal preview v0.8 has arrived! You can download the Terminal from the Microsoft Store or from the GitHub releases page. Let’s jump into what’s new!

Search

Search functionality has been added to the Terminal! The default key binding to invoke the search dropdown is {"command": "find", "keys": ["ctrl+shift+f"]}. Feel free to customize this key binding in your profiles.json if you prefer different key presses! The dropdown allows you to search up and down through the buffer as well as with letter case matching.

Retro Terminal Effects (Experimental)

Do you miss the days of scanlines and glowing text? Well this is the Terminal release for you! Thanks to community member @ironyman, you can now have CRT retro effects inside the Windows Terminal! This is an experimental feature, but to enable it you can add the following code snippet to any of your profiles:

"experimental.retroTerminalEffect": true

Settings Updates

Enhanced Panes and Tabs Key Bindings

When opening a new pane or tab with a key binding, you can now specify which profile by using the profile’s name "profile": "profile-name", guid "profile": "profile-guid", or index "index": profile-index. If none are specified, the default profile is used.

Additionally, you can override certain aspects of the profile such as the profile’s command line executable "commandline": "path/to/my.exe", starting directory "startingDirectory": "my/path", or tab title "tabTitle": "new-title".

Here are a few examples of how to implement this new feature:

Opens the default profile in a new vertical pane.

Custom Default Settings

You can now modify your profiles.json to have your own default profile settings. With this new architecture, you can set a property once and have it apply to all of your profiles. This new setting helps minimize redundant settings between profiles. To add this feature, you can modify the profiles object in your profiles.json to have the "defaults" and "list" properties in the following format:

With the above code snippet, all of the profiles will use the Cascadia Code font and have the Vintage color scheme.

Note: All of the profile settings can be found here. All can be applied to "defaults" except "guid".

UI Improvements

Tab Sizing

You now have the ability to modify the behavior of your tab widths. A new setting has been added called "titleWidthMode". This setting provides two different tab width behaviors: "equal" and "titleLength". "equal" will make all of your tabs equal width and shrink as additional tabs are added, similar to a traditional browser experience. "titleLength" will size each tab to the length of the tab title.

The Terminal originally had the default tab width behavior set to "titleLength". This release changes the default behavior to "equal". If you’d like to change your tab width behavior back to the "titleLength" mode, you can add the following code snippet to the "globals" property of your profiles.json file:

Here’s an example of how both tab width modes behave:

Bug Fixes

The tab row will now get larger when the window does!
Full screen mode now works more reliably!
Moving focus between grouped panes should act in the way you expect!
Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL) users will now see the WT_SESSION environment variable!
Heaps of crash fixes!

Microsoft Announces Availability of Windows 8 Release Preview

Microsoft Corp. today announced the availability of the Windows 8 Release Preview, the next milestone of the highly anticipated Windows 8 operating system. Available for download today in 14 languages at here, the Windows 8 Release Preview delivers a fast and fluid experience, along with a new user interface that responds equally well to touch as it does to keyboard and mouse. Since the February release of Windows 8 Consumer Preview, which was downloaded more than 1 million times in the first 24 hours, Windows 8 has become the most tested Microsoft operating system of all time, and with today's release, it enters its final phase of development before it releases to manufacturing.

We're thrilled to be at this milestone with the Windows 8 Release Preview," said Steven Sinofsky, president of the Windows and Windows Live Division at Microsoft.

New Apps Provide an Even Richer Experience
Windows 8 Release Preview delivers new apps from Microsoft and partners. Highlights include Bing Travel, News and Sports apps, as well as Gaming and Music Xbox apps that integrate with your Zune pass. The Windows 8 Release Preview also features notable improvements to the Mail, Photos and People apps that initially debuted with the Windows 8 Consumer Preview. In addition, Microsoft has worked closely with its partners to deliver apps from around the world through the Windows Store.

Beyond the new apps from Microsoft and partners, customers testing the Windows 8 Release Preview will also experience tens of thousands of refinements across the product, such as increased personalization options for the Start screen, improved multimonitor support, refinements to the way people find and download apps through the Windows Store, and new Family Safety features. The new Internet Explorer 10 redefines browsing, particularly for touch-enabled devices. The Web is as fast and fluid as any app, and with new capabilities in the Windows 8 Release Preview such as "flip ahead," it is just as intuitive. A touch-friendly and power-optimized Adobe Flash Player is now integrated into Internet Explorer 10, and it is also the first browser to feature Do Not Track "on" by default, giving customers more choice and control over their privacy.

The Path to Windows 8
Beginning June 2, 2012, Microsoft will roll out the Windows Upgrade Offer in 131 markets, including the U.S. and Canada. Consumers who buy eligible Windows 7-based PCs through Jan. 31, 2013, can purchase an upgrade to Windows 8 Pro for an estimated retail price of $14.99 (U.S.) during the time of the promotion. More information about the Windows Upgrade Offer will be available June 1. In addition to the Windows Upgrade Offer designed for consumers buying new Windows 7-based PCs, Microsoft will also announce other offers in the coming months that will help consumers with existing Windows 7-based PCs upgrade to Windows 8 when it is generally available.

In the next month, Microsoft will further detail the value Windows 8 brings to businesses at TechEd North America.

Can you unlock Windows 10 Technical Preview eventually?

Hi,

I am using the Win 10 Tech Preview which is great. When its is finally released in the Fall (or maybe in July as the rumors have suggested) can I just use my Windows 8 Key and turn this install into a full licensed version or will I have to re-install it and use my key then?

I would hazard a guess that you would have to register for a new Windows 10 key using your old Windows 8 key and that the new key would arrive by email.
