"No Audio Output Device is installed" after failed and rolled-back Windows Update

After a failed Windows Update that resulted in my system bluescreening during boot several times, I currently have no audio output, and the system isnt detecting any audio devices.

I have attempted the following so far, none of which has helped:

    • Ran the audio troubleshooter, which was unable to diagnose the issue
    • Uninstalled and reinstalled all audio devices in device manager
    • Tried using the built in audio drivers in place of vendor drivers
    • Ran dism and sfc /scannow which reported no integrity violations
    • Restarted the Windows Audio and Windows Audio Endpoint Builder services

The device manager reports all audio devices as installed and enabled, but windows reports my system as having no audio devices installed. As my job requires me to work with audio, and I also have to attend online meetings, this is incredibly frustrating and any help would be greatly appreciated.

The system is a self-built desktop computer, not a laptop, therefore there is no vendor driver support except by individual component. I have tried installing the audio driver specified by my motherboard manufacturer, but this also has not fixed the issue.

    OS Build: 19041.450

    Last updates successfully installed: KB4578968, KB4580325, KB4576478

    Last failed update: KB4579311

    Thanks!

    :)

  2. No Audio Output Device Installed after last update

After last Windows 10 update my Realtek Audio Output Device was removed, I did a roll back to last point and still do not have a Audio Output device; I even tried to install the Microsoft OEM High Definition Audio Device via Device Manager/Add Legacy Hardware
and get error message "Parameters is incorrect'. I did try installing updated drivers and related software, for Windows 10, from official Realtek web site, and still have no Audio Output device.

Any and all suggestion are welcomed - including suggested audio PCI, PCE2 card.

    No audio output device

    Hello!
I have a common problem: my Windows 10 has No Audio Output Device.
    System configuration:
    • Lenovo Legion Y520-15IKBN (laptop)
    • Windows 10 Pro, version 1909, build 18363.535;
    • Current updates;
Device manager shows these audio devices:
    • High Definition Audio Device (driver version 10.0.18362.356)
    • Intel Display Audio (10.27.0.6)
    • ASUS Xonar U3 (10.0.8.2164)
i.e. the problem persists even with an external (USB) audio device, recognized by the system.

I performed a sanity check on this issue. Sound works when I boot into Ubuntu live. Therefore, it is not a hardware problem, and is indeed a Windows problem.

Solutions that have not worked so far:
    1. Audio troubleshooter (issues found: check audio device, nothing else)
    2. Rolling back drivers
    3. Uninstalling audio devices
    4. Uninstalling any audio-related devices, incl. the likes of bluetooth speakers
    5. Updating audio drivers (from both built-in drivers and from manufacturer's site)
    6. Installing a generic audio device (installing a generic USB audio device does not succeed, and installing a generic Realtek device resulted in a BSOD)

Do you have any ideas for fixing this?

No Audio Output Device is Installed

    Hi,

You will need to select Windows 8 from the drop down list while installing the driver in compatibility mode.

I would suggest you to try setting the speaker as default audio output by following the steps below and check if it helps.

    1. Right click on the sound icon on the right bottom corner of the taskbar.

    2. Select "playback devices".

    3. If "speaker" is not set as the default device, highlight it and click "set as default".

    5. Save the changes.

    Let us know the result.
