I've been reading through various posts about this previously - seems like many people have had the above error with Intel and/or Realtek Audio. HOWEVER, I don't use Intel or Realtek audio on my PC.

I'm have the latest 20H2 update and all Windows Updates installed. Actually, I had this problem about a month ago, and could only fix it by reformatting - but it's reared its ugly head again and I don't have the time to reformat again (potentially every month!).

Interestingly enough though, I've disabled Intel HD Audio in my BIOS (way before I had the problem), as I use a USB Sound Card (SoundBlaster Omni), but I'm still getting the red cross over the volume icon right now.

Pls halp!! (any suggestions welcome and I can provide any info needed!)

    Issue:

    • Red cross icon appears over volume icon ("No Audio Output Device is installed")
    • Sound control panel shows "No audio devices are installed"
    • Device Manager shows no error icons or warning triangles on any devices (even Hidden ones)
    • The sound was working fine last night, but when I booted my PC this morning, it doesn't ☹
    Things I've tried:

    • sfc /scannow and the various DISM incantations
    • Rebooting
    • Sound troubleshooter
    • Reinstalling all audio device drivers
    • System Restore (this worked for a while last time this happened, but it re-occurs)
    • Connecting bluetooth headphones (AKG Y50BT) - while these connected, there was no sound output

    pnputil.exe

There was mention of using pnputil to remove Intel Audio. I don't have that entry, since I'm not using Intel or Realtek - but I'll attach the output of the (GUI version of) pnputil here in case there's something similar with my setup (which is the SoundBlaster and my HDMI audio (Nvidia)).

Hopefully someone might have an idea as I'm totally at a loss !

  2. No Audio Output Device is Installed

    Hi,

You will need to select Windows 8 from the drop down list while installing the driver in compatibility mode.

I would suggest you to try setting the speaker as default audio output by following the steps below and check if it helps.

    1. Right click on the sound icon on the right bottom corner of the taskbar.

    2. Select "playback devices".

    3. If "speaker" is not set as the default device, highlight it and click "set as default".

    5. Save the changes.

    Let us know the result.

You can also try this possible solution to your Issue

Fix "No Audio Output Device Is Installed" Error with Device Mannager

Device Manager is another troubleshooter which could help to fix many common computer issues, including "no audio output device is installed" error on Windows 10.

Step 1. Open the search box, type devmgmt.mcs in the Run dialog to open Device Manager.

Step 2. Scroll down to find the catagory "Sound, video and game controllers", expand it to locate your audio device and select it.

Note: If you can not see the "Sound, video and game controllers" catagory, follow the steps below to find it.

    • Select "Action" on the top of the panel. (If there is no "Action" tab, click on the blank place and then click on "Action")

    • Select "Add Legacy hardware".

Click Next on the popping up Add Hardware Wizard window.

    • Choose "Search for and install hardware automatically" and then hit "Next". (If the Wizard message reads "the wizard did not find any new hardware on your computer", click Next)

Scroll down to locate the "Sound, video and game controllers" option.

    • Select it and then click Next.

    • Choose your exact sound card and then click Next.

Click Next to install the audio driver and then click Finish.

Step 3. Right-click on the audio device. Select Enable.

Step 4. Now check whether the audio issue is solved. If persists, choose Uninstall to remove the audio driver.

Step 5. Reboot your computer to save the changes and Windows will load you the audio driver automatically.

"No Audio Output Device is installed" in Windows 20H2

    No audio output device

    Hello!
I have a common problem: my Windows 10 has No Audio Output Device.
    System configuration:
    • Lenovo Legion Y520-15IKBN (laptop)
    • Windows 10 Pro, version 1909, build 18363.535;
    • Current updates;
Device manager shows these audio devices:
    • High Definition Audio Device (driver version 10.0.18362.356)
    • Intel Display Audio (10.27.0.6)
    • ASUS Xonar U3 (10.0.8.2164)
i.e. the problem persists even with an external (USB) audio device, recognized by the system.

I performed a sanity check on this issue. Sound works when I boot into Ubuntu live. Therefore, it is not a hardware problem, and is indeed a Windows problem.

Solutions that have not worked so far:
    1. Audio troubleshooter (issues found: check audio device, nothing else)
    2. Rolling back drivers
    3. Uninstalling audio devices
    4. Uninstalling any audio-related devices, incl. the likes of bluetooth speakers
    5. Updating audio drivers (from both built-in drivers and from manufacturer's site)
    6. Installing a generic audio device (installing a generic USB audio device does not succeed, and installing a generic Realtek device resulted in a BSOD)

Do you have any ideas for fixing this?
