It was really weird. When I updated to 14251 from prior build I got the source file error so I reverted back to prior build then 14257 came out a few days later and skipped that build and went right to this one

You still have not explained how did you get another update of 14257 when you already have it installed, according to your Post #3.

Perhaps I fail to understand what you were saying which is not surprising as English is my 3rd language.

  3. Duh I am an idiot. DI didn't realize I failed to mention that the 14257 issue in terms of the DISM/Restorehealth was on my desktop. My laptop hadn't been showing the update so I found a way to push it through and now my laptop is going to 14257. I am going go grab the ESD from my laptop via a SD card.

One last question. When I use the ESD to ISO tool...which option in terms of the output do I use when given choice at beginning of program?

Sorry, I do not use the method listed in this forum's Tutorial section.
I have my " esd to iso " method.

I'll let those who do use that tutorial to answer your question.
    Thank you.

    Just a curious question :
Why do you want both a desktop and a laptop running Insider Preview build ?
    Isn't it a bit redundant ?

I have a laptop running Win 10 Home RTM, and one running Win 10 Pro Insider Preview. Even then I am contemplating to do away one of them.

That's not always the case. My install.esd is still there and I've restarted my computer at least 5 or 6 times.

That's also what I said on Post #6.
My Install.esd for 14257 is still in the Sources folder.

I wonder why it gets deleted on some systems and not on others.

I wonder that too. I have been capturing mine before upgrade restart - maybe I ought to just check if it's necessary - honestly, I've been running extended disk cleanup after upgrade is done and not even checking.

I guess it's another Windows 10 Mystery. "Why am I not getting the latest Preview update? I'm on the Fast Ring" and "Why did my install.esd get deleted?" Only the shadow (MS) knows! *Smile

  11. Finally figured out what was going wrong and I couldn't mount the ISO image. I had Winrar set to be the default program for ISO images for some weird reason. I uninstalled it and was able to mount the ISO image created by ESD to ISO. Learned something the hard way. :*Sad

The size of my ESD files is the same before restart and after the installation is complete.

I copy the install.esd before the restart because I have had install failures that then did delete the file. I do not like to download the entire update again.

Many programs that use the same file formats will automatically take ownership of a particular type during installation, quite notorious are the graphics editing programs, just have to watch closely during the install. Some will actually prompt with a list of formats [extension] that can be associated, check or uncheck as desired.
