    Fast startup

    Hi Richard,

I've just seen that there is a further Acronis True Image 2016 update available for download, dated 28/4/2016.

It details amongst other things :-

'Acronis True Image 2016 disables Windows 10 fast startup'

    as one of the fixes.

Its build number is 6569. Interestingly I cannot find the Release Note anymore for my existing build version which is 6559!

I think I will upgrade to this latest build but first make sure I have created a 'Restore Point' in the hope I can revert back to build 6559 if there are any problems!

  3. Fast startup

    Hi viffergb,

    Addendum to my last message:

After last Sunday, even after several restarts, where the hook
for the quick start is still not activated been, I have driven down my computer and no longer even started.

Today I booted him and lo and behold - the hook for the quick start has been indicated.
I could hardly believe it and had it set me to uninstall Acronis, clean registry and the data in the Program Data directory, then reinstall
    Acronis

    after a restart.

For safety's sake, I have the computer rebooted - and again the hook stayed with quick start there.
    Very beautiful!

I can explain the phenomenon from the last Sunday just so that Windows 10 responds relatively sensitive to repeated reboots.
So my operating system has for example rebuild the search index because it was reportedly damaged.
To me it looks as if the operating system changes caused by the latest Acronis update process may not be immediately or it is related to the execution of my backup tasks together (that the changes are only then become effective).
Strange, but otherwise I can not explain.

Regardless, it certainly would not hurt, to reinstall Acronis
, because in the target directories are data, that appears to previous versions and are no longer used.
I conclude, at least from the date of last modification in various files.

For me, the Quick Start now seems therefore to remain activated.
I just wanted to tell you. No fast startup :)

    Best wishes,

    Richard

You won't have Fast Startup if the system is Older and does not have a UEFI Bios , if it has a Legacy Bios like my X58A MB then it is maybe not an Option.

Looks like I had Hibernation turned OFF more info further in the Thread.

edit looks like it is an X38 MB so won't be available

  6. This desktop is old and doesn't have UEFI, I can turn on fast startup? Turn on fast startup is check marked by default for me, I have to go in and turn it off manually. If I uncheck "Allow hybrid sleep" its disabled and greyed out though.

Perhaps it is this MB ? and the Options set S1/S3 etc ? Gigabyte Boards have had Sleep issues for years......

Or that I have disabled Hibernate with powercfg ? at some point since I used to have a small SSD and need to re-enable it ?

Since .222 some options changed in the Advanced Power Scheme Options , not sure if that is my no hibernation issue showing again or not?

powercfg /a tells me I only have S3

  9. If you disable hibernation via powercfg I believe it completely disappears from the power options menu. It's not even listed. The BIOS S1/S3 capabilities being a factor is what I was thinking too.

I've never found sleep mode or hibernate very reliable, ASUS motherboards here. Plus I have SSD's as boot drives so fast startup isn't really needed so I turn it off. I've also had issues trying to boot to my BIOS with fast startup on, another reason why I turn it off.

Sorry JohnyJohn , I didn't mean to take over the Thread but Alpha's Comments got me looking into it more on this old MB which was made about the same time as yours.

You said you checked Hiberboot was set to 1 (faststartup) but did you check if Hibernation was Enabled? If not you won't see the FastStart option from what I read yesterday.

powercfg /a at a Admin Command Prompt (RC Start Button to find) will tell you the sleepstates the computer has enabled or disabled.

powercfg -h on turns Fast startup and Hibernation On

powercfg -h off turns Fast startup and Hibernation Off

I guess you saw the FastStartup Tutorial?

    https://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/4...dows-10-a.html

    And for me......

I had indeed in the past turned off hibernation with powercfg -h off due to the issue with this GByte MB in Win7 not Hibernating properly and the file being the same size as the Ram installed and had done the same with Win10 I think. ( or the setting carried thru with the upgrade ) .

I decided to switch it back on with Powercfg -h on and see if Win10 handles Hibernation any better on this Board and FastStartup appeared in the Options once again , with both S1 or S3 , the other options change depending on which one I choose in the Bios for eg if S1 is used there is no Hybrid Sleep available.

It appears in Win10 that the Hibernation File is about 40% of the Ram installed (5gb with 12gb Installed) and you can now set the Size of the Hibernation file or use it only for FastStartup (which I don't use either as it stops WOL working) with the powercfg commandline switches found here of size and Reduced/Full etc........

How are you starting the Command Prompt ? from the Start Menu Right Click ? the Run Box with cmd command? you can also run it by finding cmd.exe in C:\Windows\System32 and double clicking on it.

I usually RC the Start Button and choose Admin Command Prompt, it should stay open , same as any other window until you close it.

More options and pics in this tutorial too

**Edit : Hibernation on my gigabyte X58A does not work properly in Win10 either , so I have disabled it again, thus no Hybrid sleep or Fast Startup either.
