  3. My HP laptop NEVER showed the option regardless of hibernation on or off
    - yep I pressed show options......

    I added the registry mod to turn Fast Startup off, but I doubt it had any effect

    C'est la vie!

    After playing around, I turned hibernation off again

    I dont remember turning anything off. I dont really want hibernation options.
    I have a Samsung 128GB 850 Pro as my boot drive.

    Is there anything else you would recommend?
    Should I try turning hibernation on to see if I get the option regarding Fast Startup?

    @cyberrufus
    Here is the output. Doe that imply my motherboard wont support hibernation or Fast Startup?

  6. The Windows Fast Startup is a hybrid sleep mode, similar to hibernation. If you don't want hibernation, you likely don't want fast startup either. If you have an SSD its not going to gain you much anyway, IMHO. As has been mentioned several times, run powercfg -h on from a command prompt and see if you get the options you want. It's easy enough to run powercfg -h off to turn it back of again.

  7. In your last screenshot, it says that Hibernation is not enabled. That means it is disabled, so you won't see the option. You have an SSD, so there's really no reason to consider turning it on, especially since it has been causing some issues.

    No option to disable Fast Startup

    Floob... Here's quick way of seeing if hibernation really is on or off. In the first screenshot, go to your Folder options and temporarily unhide the protected system files (uncheck the box). Say it's ok and Apply. Second screenshot, open your "C" drive. if you DO NOT see the file Hiberfil.sys, hibernation is off. And so is Fast Startup because Fast Startup must use Hibernation.

    Remember to go back and hide the Protected System Files in screenshot #1.

    Based on this, looks like it wont enable hibernation mode for me anyway.

    Code: C:\Users>powercfg -h on Unable to perform operation. An unexpected error (0x65b) has occurred: Function failed during execution.[/quote]
    @DeaconFrost
    Ok, sounds like I dont want to enable hibermation/Fast Statup, I'm happy with that.
    Just seems odd that I cant if I wanted to. I thought most modern motherboards/drivers would support it.
    Unless I have an odd BIOS setting somewhere.

    @f14tomcat
    Looks like its definitely off. Thanks for confirming.

    Did you run that as Admin Command prompt or normal un-elavated? Not using Admin Command prompt can give you
    error (0x65b)

    I just did it as un-elevated and got:

    C:\Users\dhubb>powercfg -h off
    Unable to perform operation. An unexpected error (0x65b) has occurred: Function failed during execution.

    No option to disable Fast Startup

    Floob, now you know how to turn it On/Off and find all the options! Great!

    Suggestion.....you have a Samsung EVO 850 I think you said. Hibernation is really not necessary, neither fast startup. Just more wear and tear on an SSD drive for extremely little gain, if any. Your choice, but I don't use it on solid state devices. Plus the Hiberfil.sys eats up 6-7 GB.

    Yep, I agree. Definitely keeping it turned off. Was just a bit surprised it was off by default when I installed Win 10.
    Maybe it was trying to help me!
