I've been having this issue for the past few weeks and absolutely nothing is working for me.. Repairing it doesn't do a thing, trying to reinstall any version of Windows and keeping my files isn't possible unless Windows is running, which it can't because I can't access the Windows Menu Settings unless I boot the PC & manually boot the drive from the F12 menu..

My only possible option is to completely reset my PC without keeping any of my files..

Is it possible to wait it out and hope another Microsoft update starts automatically..? Hopefully fixing the invisible password prompt issue..?

Don't know if it will help in your case, but I have had to sort this out today for the second time. First time around, I restarted probably five times before I got the password field back on. Today, I must have restarted ten times before it worked.

I see that some people refer to clicking restart and similar - that's not been an option for me as I've only had the 'language' 'network' and 'accessibility' icons to play with.

So, I just hold down the power button to kill - press button to restart - hold button to kill - press button to restart - ... ten times or so *Wink

Given that this apparently is a known fault, why doesn't MS just fix it?

No password prompt at login screen. Can not login.

I've had this problem since resetting Windows and deleting my NGC folder in an attempt to resolve my PIN not working. When starting the laptop from shutdown or waking it from sleep I'd get the following screen after the time etc:

No password prompt at login screen. Can not login. [IMG]

Rebooting showed me the login screen. I think I've found a fix for the solution though:

Power Options > Choose what the power buttons do (On the left) > Change settings that are currently unavailable > Untick "Turn on fast start-up" > Save changes.

So far that has worked for me, turning off fast startup seems to be OK. It just makes boot a little more sluggish.

  5. FINALLY, someone who has the same problem as I do, lol. Yeah, no login box, nice beach pic with just the Easy Access and Network icons, NO power button and no response to any keyboard input.

I always have to do the power on/off 3-4 times, go to troubleshooting, then the system tries to diagnose the problem or fix the issue and it just hangs there. So I'll power it down and when it starts up, everything is normal. Unil I shut it down and the problem is right back the next time I try to power up.

So I've taken to just hibernating my puter, which works for a while until for some reason (possible an update) I find that it's been shut down and I have to go throught the same b.s. again, real pitfa, lol.

  6. Also I can't use the restore option because a LONG time ago the thumb drive the system was using to automatically make restore points got full, and I just kept ignoring the problem (yeah not a good idea ;?) so now if I wanted to restore it, I'd lose a LOT of apps and programs. Plus I've developed a phobia to reinstalling an OS, lol. So now I'm looking for a way to fix this issue, but not sure if any of the aforementioned fixes applies to this particular problem, any ideas?

  7. I get exactly the same screen, no login box. I have Ubuntu / W10 dual boot and do the 3-time power-off trick to go to safe mode. My problem is that "Turn on fast start-up" is not available when I go to power options (in safe mode), the error is
" your power plan information isn't available. the rpc server is not running"

    Any help appreciated. Thanks.

  8. No password prompt at login screen. Can not login.

I have a very similar issue. My son's laptop, a Dell Latitude has Windows 10 and I installed an SSD a few months ago. March 28 he called and said his machine stops prompting for login. He brought it over after some attempts to fix it over the phone. I have tried every suggestion on this and other forums and it is still stuck at the login prompt. I do have it functional for him to do his classwork as it does run in Safe mode w networking. So far I have tried:
    - Making sure Credential Manager service is running
    - The laptop does not have a fast mode in Windows 10 (I guess since it has an SSD) but did disable in BIOS
    - Removed the recent Windows update that did install March 28th. Same day as issue (sorry, forgot to catch KB #)
    - Blindly typing in the password did not work
    - Ctl-Alt-Del did not work either
    - Repair startup did not work (tried multiple times)
    - Connecting an external monitor did not work
    - I see the icons on the lower right and can run assistant, networking settings, and restart but still no login screen
    - Waited for 1/2 hour on that login screen and it repeatedly goes back to the startup screen with time and date after sitting idle and trying to login
    - also went thru steps in safe mode to bypass the login screen and that seemed to bypass the time/date screen but it hangs before starting up.
    - I have tried a minimal boot, removed all non-essential services and startup programs, no joy
    - I turned on debugging to try and determine where it is stopping but need help interpreting.
    - The PC does prompt for his password in Safe Mode which is a head scratcher.

Any help or suggestions are appreciated

@toddemiles: I also have the same issue. Since few days ago I didn't experience any problem, then I started to have the problem occasionally. Yesterday I installed Creators Update and, after some succesful login attemps, I'm no longer able to login. Except in Safe Mode - which seems to work fine.
Did you find a solution for the issue? I've tried everyhting if found on the internet, without success... *Huh

  10. Some users on this forum thread have mentioned being able to put the computer into safe mode with networking. I have tried several methods to get the computer into safe mode, but all have been unsuccessful. Probably the strangest of all has been pressing and holding the power button to shutdown 3 times. After doing that, it's meant to enter safe mode, but instead it loads up windows defender and proceeds to do a system scan. If I try to update windows defender from that screen, it will look like it's downloading and then fail with an error code after "installing".

If someone could give me a couple of methods for booting into safe mode with networking, that would be very appreciated. Thank you!

You should hold the SHIFT key while selecting "Restart" button. Hold SHIFT key until it's shown the menu that allows you to access Troubleshooting section.
Here you can select the voice menu that allows also to reboot in safe mode.

I also had this issue when I was not able to go to safe mode by F8 or shift keys method. What worked for me was "Let the windows come to lock screen, wait for 1-2 minute on the screen, then keep pressing the Power button for 10-20 seconds to shutdown. Repeat this process 3-4 times."

I finally managed to get out from this situation.
One of the checks that I made was on networks adapters devices in Device Manager and I noticed that after last Windows Update (Creators Update) all the WAN Miniport adapters where missing.

I don't know if could be a solution for every one, but once I got again all the Miniport adapters, I didn't experience any more the login prompt issue! *Smile

PS: also reinstalled Network Adapters drivers (both wired and wireless)

Reset worked for me for now. It maintained all the data in the hard disk. I will need to reinstall applications though. I am able to login to my account but still not getting the same error when I lock my screen.
