Windows 10: No sound on my hp laptop

Tried everything I could find on internet or on here, last time I fixed the problem myself but this time it doesn't work, here's the problem:


Opened my laptop one day and suddenly sound didn't work, i couldn't even mute it or raise it, it was like it vanished and the bottom right sound icon has a red x on it and says 'No Audio Output Device Is Installed'. I run a normal check, then a more thorough one, one with hp online customer services, but laptop can't find the source of problem. I do all updates that exists, restart the laptop, the whole shebang and it still doesn't work. I go in device manager and try to delete and reinstall the audio driver or else like most forums says but there isn't any, so i try to find one on the Realtek website.


Since my laptop says 'no audio output blabla' I tried to install manually the one my laptop is supposed to have (and restarting the laptop didn't make it reinstall automatically like some forums said), but then when I follow the instructions and restart the computer, the audio driver isn't there, it's just vanished. It happened two times.


Having done everything my non-computer friendly brain could find on the internet, I decided to restart my computer and open the ''secret'' menu ( I don't remember what it's called but you open it by frantically pressing Esc and it's also where you find the Bios I think?) to test the sound, and there the speaker AND the headphones works!!! I then ran the full length analysis of the laptop on loop until it finds something (which fixed it the last time if I remember it correctly). But after 18+hours of analysis, it didn't work this time.


I am now here, hoping someone could help me fix this

Summary: sound stopped working on hp laptop, most likely because the Audio driver disappeared, re-installing it is not working and everything I could find is also not working.

HP Pavilion X2 upgrade to 1709 - no sound


I eventually got my detachable laptop to upgrade to Fall Creator, and was very pleased, then noticed that when I received notifications there was no sound, checked all the usual suspects, volume, system sounds, drivers, etc even plugged a headset in, no sound. Using the HP troubleshooter, its first step was to take me through Windows troubleshooter, through the drivers uninstall, it even had me reset my BIOS. HP have a hardware tester built into the UEFI, and on following the instructions, sounds out of the speakers, indicating a pass, but still no sounds from W10. The last suggestion from HP was to update the BIOS, however knowing the system worked before the upgrade decided against that. I followed the roll-back instruction, and after noting the audio drivers in 1709, found the same drivers in the roll backed version, but the sound was working again - bizarre!

This is where I'm at on my HP laptop with Windows 10 and the Anniversary update.

I completed step #3 "hardware and sound" but that took me to an option for "sound, speakers." There was no "properties" as step #4 suggests. I selected "sound, speakers" and then found "properties." After selecting "properties" there was no "enhancements
tab" as step #5 suggests.

Regardless, I then uninstalled the realtek audio driver. I noticed that when I did this without restarting my laptop that the sound was now tinny, but not distorted as it was previously. After restarting, the sound was again full, yet distorted.

Realtek still shows in my programs list, though it shows no memory is used.

I know you say you're not that guy, but stepping into the $250+ range really brings a change in build quality that might have you never having to buy another set. Otherwise, getting 6 speakers with decent sound in a headset is hard, and that's what you are asking for, and I have no suggestions, but just a bump up the list. *Stick Out Tongue
