Windows 10: No speakers or headphones are plugged in

My sound icon is showing a red X, and hovering on it shows "No speakers or headphones are plugged in". Plugging headphones in makes no difference. Troubleshooter says the "audio peripheral doesn't appear to be plugged in. check the connection", and right clicking sound icon shows "Speaker setup UNKNOWN" and the only option it offers is OFF. Settings for sound show NO OUTPUT DEVICES FOUND. I have checked my headphone with the rear and front port jack points of the desktop.

Realtek HD Audio Manager shows a blank screen and say "To activate GUI, please plug in an audio device in the system."
Have checked bios. Audio is enabled in bios.

Device Manager for Sound, video and game controllers checked and it shows everything is working fine.

I have already Updated the latest audio driver from computer manufacturers site. Have tried installing and reinstalling the driver. Windows audio services restarted.

Speakers playing when headphones are plugged in

I have an HP laptop with windows 10. When my headphones are plugged in, the speakers are still playing. When I go to sounds, the only device listed is the speakers. How can I silence the speakers when the headphones are plugged in.

Is the issue specific to only Headphones/ Does External Speaker play when plugged in?

I suggest you to try resetting the default device as shown in the steps given below and check if the issue persists.

  Plug in the Headphones in the machine.

  Go to Start and Control Panel.
  
• 
  Select 'Hardware and Sound'.
  
• 
  Click 'Change system sounds'.
  
• 
  Click 'Playback' tab. (It should then show you your headphones in the list).
  
• 
  Select your proper Headphone device from the list, then Click 'Set Default'.
  
• 
  Now unplug your Headphones and select speakers from the list, then Click 'Set Default'.
