    Start over from scratch again.
Download the Media Creation Tool and watch the screen as it progresses. Make sure you input correctly.
If you were using Windows 7 Home Premium or lower, you select Windows 10 Home.
If you were using Windows 8.1 ( non-pro ), you also select Windows 10 Home.

If you were using Win 7 Pro or Ultimate, or Win 8.1 Pro, you select Windows 10 Pro.

    Yes, it will take awhile.
Just make sure you make the correct selection when asked to.

Yes that did the trick no more requests for key but it will not let me retain apps as it says I have changed the language which is news to me. how can I check what
language I am currently using. I have to pop out now to play bowls so hope to progress tomorrow

Did you buy it in UK ? If yes, I would presume you should select English ( United Kingdom ).
If that was what you selected and it said you have changed language, then you will need to find out which language your Win 7 comes with. Do you have owner manual for the Win 7 computer ?

Worst case scenario...... reinstall the apps you had in Win 7.

After checking the language it was American English which is strange as when I loaded windows 7 it was UK English I requested. No problem my spelling leaned that way. after entering us English the reload went ahead ok keeping my apps but unbelievably it has just finished installing and still NO START UP MENU

I have greatly appreciated your concern and help to find a solution for me, what I will be trying is your suggestion of adding a new user if I can find that option I will of course post as soon as the problem is solved. In the mean time I am getting used to using file explorer.
