  1. Non-stop "high" CPU usage in Windows 10

Hi all, I'm having a new issue. For some unexplainable reason, my CPU never returns to idle (0-2%). It constantly maintains 20%-50%. The issue seems to be the "Server" service. It took me about this entire day to pinpoint it.

LanmanServer (a.k.a. the Server service) forces the System process to maintain 10-15% constant CPU usage which seems to "incite" other processes to provide the other CPU usage spike. Once this service has been disabled on start up, I regain the 0-2% CPU usage, which is what I like.

The System process, when analyzed with Process Explorer yields the following:ntoskrnl.exe!PsReturnProcessNonPagedPoolQuotantoskrnl.exe!PsReturnProcessNonPagedPoolQuotantoskrnl.exe!PsReturnProcessNonPagedPoolQuota

These 3 add up to the 10-15% mentioned above.

I'm not sure why this LanmanServer (Server service) bothers with the NT kernel? And what in the world can I do to stop this?

    Here's the description from services.msc:

Supports file, print, and named-pipe sharing over the network for this computer. If this service is stopped, these functions will be unavailable. If this service is disabled, any services that explicitly depend on it will fail to start.

Well, I do tend to share my printer over my home network so that my wife can print documents, but the printer is offline at this moment. Turning it on doesn't seem to reduce CPU usage at all, either.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Edit: I think it might be prudent to point out that the percentages written above are all at idle. To add to this, when Server service is disabled, the CPU temp returns to normal 30s (mid-high for me). When the Server service is enabled, I don't see any core temp below 50c.

  2. Windows Explorer high CPU Usage in Windows 10

    Hi Andrew,

Usually, too many background processes can boost your CPU usage. Since you already disabled the apps that are not necessary on startup,
we suggest checking the applications running once you have successfully boot Windows 10. To do this, simply follow the steps below:

    • Click on the Start button and type Task Manager on the search box.
    • On the Task Manager window, you should see the programs running.
    • Click on the More details drop-down button to see the total number of apps running and their real-time CPU usage.

From there, you should see what applications are running on high CPU usage. You can also
restart the Windows Management Instrumentation service and see if your CPU performance will improve. Follow the instructions below to restart the service:

    • Click on the Start button and type Services.
    • Scroll down the list and look for Windows Management Instrumentation.
    • Right click on it and select Restart.

Should you have further questions, please let us know.

  3. high cpu usage

After downloading windows 10, anytime I run any programs, I get high CPU usage. It does not matter whether it is google chrome, task manager, playing games, whatever. Anything seems to spike the CPU usage. I have already run malwarbytes and my antivirus
programs and find no viruses. Any suggestions? Thanks.

Non-stop "high" CPU usage in Windows 10

High CPU and memory usage on Windows 10 with Microsoft Edge.

Wow, this reply really nailed it. For both Edge and Firefox, I monitored the CPU usage and picked a process with high CPU usage. I killed 1 process per app and the CPU went down to under an average of 10%.

One connection was Fox News (Firefox), but can't see which one was stopped in Edge.

    Great suggestion!
