Windows 10: Not getting latest Windows Defender definitions through Windows Update

Up until today I always got the latest Defender definitions via Windows Update. Today however, WU told me my PC was "Up to date", but checking Microsoft Malware Protection Center told me my definitons were from yesterday. I tried updating through Windows Defender itself and it updated to the latest definitons.

Did anyone else experience this or is something wrong with my Windows Update? Until yesterday it worked fine and I didn't change anything.

I am using windows 10 Home Single

While updating windows defender I get a connection failed error whereas, if I try updating through windows update I get this error "Definition Update for Windows Defender - KB2267602 (Definition 1.215.2267.0) - Error 0x80070643".

Please help.

It is fixed on my computer now. I updated the Windows Defender definitions through Windows Defender itself. Either MS magically fixed it or my updating it through Defender solved the problem.

If you are still having this issues try updating through Windows Defender as shown in the screen shot given by ÁrniSigmundsson. Thank you ÁrniSigmundsson!!!

This is how you get to Windows Defender....

Windows Settings

Update & Security

Windows Defender (in list of options on the left)

click on the "Open Windows Defender" button

choose the "Update" tab

click on the "Update Definitions" button

hopefully that runs ok and your definitions are updated

I've been having this issue with both my desktop (running 1703) and my dads netbook (running 1607) so I think it's a ms issue

 

While Microsoft are known to update their definitions two-hourly, these are only delivered to their business Enterprise customers for their servers to use. The Retail definitions are updated less frequently. There's no regular pattern, but usually a new one is issued at least once a day. Sometime there's a longer gap, so it may appear that windows update has stopped working. It hasn't - there are just no new definitions available yet.

The latest version of the definitions available through windows update is 1.245.1157.0 and was issued about five hours ago.

I was not able to update to 1.245.1157.0 through Windows Update. It kept telling me my PC was up to date after searching for updates. Only updating through Windows Defender itself worked.

New definitions were definitely available but Windows Update did not find them. Thats what I'm concerned about.

 

Then you may have a windows update problem after all. Try running the 'Windows Update Troubleshooter'. Find it in Settings > Update & Security >Troubleshoot (or type Troubleshoot in the Cortana/Search box on the taskbar).

 

Did that and also sfc /scannow, no errors. I also uninstalled the latest Flash Security update just to see if Windows Update works correctly. It found the update again and reinstalled it without problems.

So could this be an issue on Microsofts side?

 

i should say i did an in-place upgrade this to resolve this and other non related issues on my desktop PC and i'm still having this issue. Update did however sucessfully download and install the last cumlative update though as shown here:

 

We are in different countries. I've noticed that sometimes it takes time for newly released updates to replicate across all Microsoft's update servers.

 

the issue for me started monday then tuesday during the day windows update was finding and downloading them but int he evening going into today it started playing up again

Windows Update just found and downloaded defintions version 1.245.1162.0 for me. So it seems like Windows Update and updating through Defender itself uses different servers. For some reason WU skipped some defintions.

Does Windows Update find a new definition update for you now? Can you update the definitions manually via Defender itself?

 

Checking in Defender itself just got that definition for me.

 

done now to play the waiting game since i have all the latest updates. I wasn't recieving any error messages though and i have been getting the definitions correctly via defender and my dad's netbook has the exact problem as well while running 1607.

(UPDATE) just run update on my dad's netbook without making any changes and it found and installed latest definitions

(UPDATE 2) just ran update on my desktop and it found and installed the latest definition
