Hi there

So recently , my battery life became very weak . laptop fans are always so loud .. When opening task manager, i noticed that the notepad is consuming about 40% sometimes though i don't use it at all i use WORD instead ..
also the memory is always at 30% or above but i don't have any apps opened.

I tried to shutdown , restart but this always happens

The Sports Application doesn't really consume much CPU, RAM and battery power. It only uses about 40 Kilobytes of RAM and very little cpu! (about 0.5%). Found it out on various task manager applications.

  3. Multiple Duplicate Folders under This PC in File Explorer

This is now getting serious. If you have Explorer open for any period of time it accumulates the Documents Folders but it's also consuming huge amounts of CPU and it's noticeable when you're trying to run your apps. I've now seen it consuming > 40% of
the CPU. What do we have to do to get Microsoft to take notice?

Then you have some kind of problem, when I run it it uses 0% CPU and 2mb of memory. Maybe run SFC /SCANNOW from an elevated CMD prompt.

  7. Checking For System Corruption

    Notepad consuming cpu 40% [IMG]
Information As with anything like this, check your system for corruption. Corruption of your system can cause a whole host of odd errors and behaviors.

    Notepad consuming cpu 40% [IMG]
    Step One
    Notepad consuming cpu 40% [IMG]
    Run SFC (System File Checker)

Open an admin Command Prompt and type:

    Code: sfc /scannow
This should fix any system file corruption if there is any.

    Notepad consuming cpu 40% [IMG]
    Step Two
    Notepad consuming cpu 40% [IMG]
Run DISM (Deployment Image Servicing and Management Tool)

Using the same Command Prompt type:

    Code: dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth
This should fix any component store corruption.

Note If the sfc command fails, run this command then try Step One again. Sometimes this will fix sfc errors.

    Step Three
    Notepad consuming cpu 40% [IMG]
    Run CHKDSK (Disk Checker)

Using the same Command Prompt, type

    Code: chkdsk C: /scan
This will let you know if there are any errors in the file system itself. If it comes up with errors, type

    Code: chkdsk C: /F /R
This command will perform a more thorough check and attempt to fix any errors and recover any data from bad sectors (if any exist.)

There would normally be a drop down arrow next to the notepad icon in task manager you should be able to open that and see what exactly is eating your cpu , there isn't leading me to believe thats not notepad at all but malware/virus (just a guess if you scroll up to apps is it listed there)? what happens if you highlight it and click "end process" does it go away and stay away?

I'd agree the most likely cause is malware. E.g.
cpu 100% because of notepad.exe? - TechSpot Forums
    - just for information.

You need to use appropriate tools to clean your system.

This is what you should see if it is really Windows Notepad:

You can compare the file and process sizes and other information with that shown on your system.

I'm with dalchina on this. The most probable reason is that the 'notepad.exe' that's running is in fact malware hiding under the Notepad name. Have you looked at its Properties in Task Manager and compared it with the genuine example dalchina gave?

  14. Has to be something like that, I don't use Notepad but Notepad++ and when I used UltraEdit a large program, it never used 40% everything I am running right now only uses 3 to 10%

Why does the System process randomly start consuming 30-40% of CPU?: I'll often enter my office to the sound of my computer's fan operating at full speed.
