Windows 10: Notepad Files Open Blank

Recently, I've noticed that some random notepad files are no longer containing any actual text. I've attempted "Ctrl+*" to check if maybe the text was hidden, which it wasn't. I've tried to check for any previous versions, of which there are none. I've even tried Command Prompt's "DISM.exe" to try and fix it, though the command I was given didn't work. However, once I use the system scan and 87 errors were fixed, I discovered the notepad file I needed hadn't actually regained its text.


While I believe it may be associated with a recent notepad file update, of which I had not known about, I am unable to figure out a way to recover the work I put into this. On the bright side, this isn't a necessity, and I can simply do it again. This is incredibly annoying, though! I would love to know if anyone had any ideas for how I could solve this problem for if I come across a file like this in the future.

There could be a number of factors as to why you are experiencing issues with a file on your computer. One possible cause could be corrupted system files.

I'd like to know more about your concern. Kindly verify if you were able to open the file before after saving it. Is the issue specific to a particular notepad file? Have you made any changes to the computer prior to the issue?

Meanwhile, I suggest that you run the System File Checker and DISM tool to scan for any corrupted system files. Here's how:

1. On the Start menu, type Command Prompt. Right-click the result, and then select
   Run as administrator.
2. Copy or type each command followed by hitting Enter.
   
   dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth
   
   sfc /scannow
   
   

You can also restore the previous version of the notepad file. To do this, follow the steps below:

1. Right-click the notepad file and then select Properties.
   
2. Click the Previous Versions tab.
   
3. Under File versions, select a version you would like to restore. Click
   Open to check for the contents. If you're satisfied with the contents of the file, you can click
   Restore. You will be prompted to overwrite the existing file version that you have.

Notepad opens on startup. How do I stop this?

Hi,

• A month or so ago.
• A small error box in the middle of the Notepad blank page, stating, 'Access Denied'
• I have only done the steps within this thread.

When I close this box the Notepad blank page is left and then I close Notepad.

I have to do this every time the computer boots!

How do I get Notepad to list recently opened Notepad files?

Today, right clicking on the Notepad icon on the taskbar has stopped giving a list of recently open Notepad files. This list is extremely useful to me. Is there any way to recover this feature ?

UPDATE: When I left click and right click several times, there intermittently appears the list of recently open Notepad files. But I don't have a reliable method for accessing this list. Grrr.
