Windows 10: Nothing Happens When Search is Clicked in Windows 10

I have four different computers exhibiting this same behavior.

All have exhibited this problem since upgrading from Windows 7 Pro to Windows 10 Pro.

The one I am currently using is Windows 10 Pro Version 1903 Build 18362.418.

When I click the Search icon (magnifying glass) in the Taskbar, nothing happens. No search window appears.

If I open the Start menu and begin typing (which on other machines would invoke Search), nothing happens.

If I right-click the Start icon and select Search, nothing happens.


Well, ALMOST nothing happens.

In the Process list in Task Manager, Cortana is listed as running, but "Suspended". When I click the Search icon, the "Suspended" status goes away for a few moments (possibly until I start working in another application).


If I open Windows Explorer and use the "Search This PC" box in the upper-right, it WILL search the drive and return results. However, it doesn't quickly find apps and settings like Windows Search does. (E.g.: Start Search, begin typing "Notepad" or "Background" and quickly see a result for the Notepad app for the Desktop Background Personalization settings.)


Tablet Mode is Off.

Indexing reports that it is complete.

I have tried the Indexer Troubleshooter without success.

I have Rebuilt the Index under Advanced Indexing Options.

I have verified that the Windows Search service is running and set to Automatic start.

I have attempted the "Reinstall Windows Apps through Powershell" solution without success. (Get-AppXPackage-AllUsers, etc)


Since one solution that is occasionally mentioned is to create a new user account (which I'd prefer not to do if I can avoid it), I figure I'll mention this: In the Account settings, if I try to set a profile picture I receive an error message: "Setting the account picture failed, please try again".

Windows 10: In the new version of Windows, Explorer has a section called Quick Access. This includes your frequent folders and recent files. Explorer defaults to opening this page when you open a new window. If you’d rather open the usual This PC, with links to your drives and library folders, follow these steps:

• Open a new Explorer window.
• Click View in the ribbon.
• Click Options.
• Under General, next to “Open File Explorer to:” choose “This PC.”
• Click OK

Edge Search Does Not Permit Change of Region


I got these suggestions from the Microsoft Community forum.No. 1 worked for me:

Thank you for posting the query on Microsoft Community. I am glad to assist you on this.
We have reproduce the issue here and we are able to access non-regional search for google using Microsoft Edge.
I would suggest you to try the below steps and check if it helps.
Step 1:
Clear browsing data option of Microsoft Edge and check if you face the issue. To do so perform the steps below.

1. Click on the More actions icon next to the feedback icon present on top right corner of the Project Spartan homepage.
2. Select Settings and click on Choose what to clear.
3. Check the boxes Browsing history, Cookies and saved website data and Cached data and files and click on Clear.

Step 2:
I suggest you to create a new user account and check if the issue occurs.

1. Go to Settings.
2. Choose Accounts and then select Family and other users.
3. Select add someone else on this PC.
4. Enter a user name and hit next.
5. Click on Finish.
6. Sign out from the current Account and Log into the new account.

Step 3:
It could also happen because of network issue. I suggest you to try with different network connection and check if it helps.

 

HyperSLI (Enabling SLI on non-sli motherboards)

To turn off windows updates in windows 7 follow these steps:

Click the start button, in the search box type in 'windows updates', click on 'windows update'
in the search results list, in the left side of the windows update window click 'change settings'
then in the option bar select 'Never check for updates'.
