Windows 10: Notifications from Yammer communities now available in Microsoft Teams

Today weâre announcing the rollout of notifications from Yammer communities in Microsoft Teams. With millions of employees working remotely or in hybrid environments, itâs more important than ever for employees to feel connected. Teams makes it easier to collaborate with others, create workspaces, chat, meet virtually with others, and integrate your business solutions all from a single platform. But many conversations extend beyond your workgroups and departments, linking employees who may have never met or have never worked together. These types of engagements are happening in communities. Last year, we released the Communities app for Microsoft Teams, brings all of your Yammer communities and conversations into Teams. Today, we are excited to take that integration to the next level.

Get Yammer Communities notifications in Teams

Stay up to date with notifications coming from your Yammer communities while in Teams. Once installed, you will receive Yammer notifications in the Teams Activity feed on web, desktop, and mobile.

This means that you can be notified in Teams for high-value scenariosâwhen announcements are made in communities that you are a member of, and when you are @mentioned in a conversation. You can then like read, respond to the post and react with our new inclusive reactions without leaving Teams.

Take corporate communications to the next level

The Communities app in Teams brings a platform for your communities and employees to thrive. Communicators and leaders can now use these notifications and other scenarios in Yammer to keep everyone connected and informed of news and updates by sending push notifications that reach all the way to the lock screen on mobile devices, and new insights offer deep insights and feedback into engagement happening on those communications. Perfect for:

Large scale announcements such as policy updates, safety information, and organizational change

Frontline workers and mobile employees who need to access important information and conversations with headquarters from mobile devices

Employee communities that span departments such as new employee onboarding, and diversity & inclusion communities

Functional communities that connect people to crowdsource solutions, ideate, and share with coworkers (example: hackathons, events, kickoffs)

Notifications from Yammer communities are now available in the Teams mobile app

If youâre new to Communities, hereâs how you can use Yammer with Microsoft Teams to keep everyone connected.

Install the Communities app in Teams

Any user can install the Communities app using the options in the Teams app bar (see below) and pin it in just a few clicks. IT Admins can also choose to deploy and pin the app for all users or particular departments through custom policies.

Install the Communities app, powered by Yammer, from the app store in Microsoft Teams.

Better together

Weâre continuing to deepen the integration of communities and teams to help organizations achieve more. Recently, weâve added Search to the web, desktop, and mobile apps so you can find and discover community conversations without leaving Teams. Weâve also updated the Yammer channel tab to inherit the styling and functionality of the new Yammer. Users will automatically see this change with no action required from them.

The new Yammer is generally available worldwide

Yammer connects and engages employees across the organization. Last November, we announced an entirely new Yammer experience, delivering new capabilities and integrations that power leadership engagement, corporate communications, and knowledge sharing across Microsoft 365. Today, we’re thrilled to announce that the new Yammer is now generally available for all customers. We’re also excited to unveil several additional features to help your organizations get more out of Yammer and collaborate across companies.

Close conversations that have come to a conclusion

Change a conversation to a question - Community managers will soon be able to convert a regular conversation into a question, if the person creating the post didn’t use the Question type when creating it. This can be helpful to draw attention to unanswered questions and also to enable additional functionality like “Mark best answer”.

Yammer mobile superpowers
Modern organizations require mobile solutions that help connect employees and move work forward – wherever that work is happening. The new Yammer is available on iOS and Android, with some added improvements, including:

Dark Mode is now available for Yammer mobile. Whether you prefer light or dark, now you can pick your favorite theme on either iOS or Android.

New mobile video sharing that helps you instantly capture, edit, apply filters, and publish compelling videos up to 3 minutes long right from mobile.

Microsoft Teams

The new Communities app for Teams for the desktop and Teams Mobile are now generally available, helping everyone, including Firstline Workers and deskless employees stay connected, receive important updates and alerts, attend live events, and share feedback and ideas across teams and locations.

Interactive conversations in Outlook

You can now engage with Yammer conversations directly from your Outlook inbox. See the full Yammer conversation, like, and reply directly from the email notification without having to switch applications or open a browser.

Updated Yammer Conversations web part for SharePoint

A new Yammer web part is now available for SharePoint Online. With this update, your existing Yammer web part will automatically inherit the new Yammer styling and bring added features to your SharePoint sites and pages. Learn more.

Security and compliance

We’ve also added additional admin controls like Native Mode to help organizations better manage their data, privacy, security, and compliance needs. Coming next

Featured Conversations – Yammer administrators can boost the visibility of critical messages in the Home feed by featuring the conversation to drive engagement.

External guests in Yammer communities – add people from outside your organization to your Yammer communities using Azure B2B, which ensures admins can manage user data, privacy, and compliance. This change will also enable communities with external guests to host live events, create custom policies for file storage and community creation, support local data residency and more.

Bring the new Yammer to your organization

Microsoft 365 Global Admins and verified Yammer Network Admins can configure access to the new Yammer through the Yammer admin portal. Admins can enable the toggle in the suite header and choose the default experience for their network: classic Yammer or the new Yammer. Learn more about enabling the new Yammer for your organization and see our detailed Frequently Asked Questions.

After an admin has enabled the new Yammer, users will access the new Yammer or switch back to classic using the toggle in the navigation bar.

Then people in your organization can use the toggle to switch between the new experience, and the classic experience in their home (canonical) networks. You will still see the classic Yammer experience in external networks.

Bring all your questions and feedback about the new Yammer to this 'Ask Microsoft Anything' (AMA) on Thursday, July 23, 2020, 9:00-10:00 AM PT. Members of the Yammer team will be online during this one-hour event to respond directly to your posts in the Yammer AMA discussion space.

Windows Phone apps Skype for Business, Teams, and Yammer discontinued

Windows phone apps for Skype for Business, Microsoft Teams, and Yammer are retiring on May 20, 2018

Summary

Effective May 20, 2018, the Windows Phone apps for Skype for Business, Microsoft Teams, and Yammer will be retired. Starting on that date, these apps will no longer be available for download from Microsoft Store, and Microsoft will no longer support them.

While Microsoft continues to support Windows 10 Mobile, we are not focused on building new features for the system. We will continue to invest in the Skype for Business, Microsoft Teams, and Yammer mobile apps for iOS and Android, and also in desktop apps for Windows and Mac.

Moving forward, Windows Phone users will have the best experience by using Skype for Business, Microsoft Teams, and Yammer in the mobile web browser.

How does this affect me?

After May 20, 2018, the Skype for Business, Microsoft Teams, and Yammer apps for Windows Phone will no longer be available from Microsoft Store. Existing users will have the following experience:

Skype for Business and Yammer apps may continue to work, but we can’t provide any guarantees. These apps will no longer receive updates or support.

The Microsoft Teams app will no longer work, and users will receive an error message when they try to connect.

What do I have to do to prepare for this change?

Going forward, Windows Phone users can connect to Skype for Business, Yammer, and Microsoft Teams by accessing them as follows:

Skype for Business: We continue to invest in the Skype for Business mobile apps for iOS and Android, and also in desktop applications for Windows and Mac.

Microsoft Teams: Users can access Microsoft Teams by using the mobile browser.

Yammer: Users can access Yammer using the mobile browser.

Microsoft Teams users now able to add Yammer tab to Teams channel

Starting today, Microsoft Teams users will be able to add a Yammer tab to their Teams channel that loads a specified group or topic feed from Yammer. This new feature will allow members follow and share conversations in Yammer without having to leave Teams.

Your team members can participate in the Yammer conversation, right from Teams, or discuss a Yammer conversation in Teams before posting a reply to the wider Yammer group. When a Teams member goes to the Yammer tab, they are authenticated again by Yammer, so that they only see Yammer content that they have access to.

Yammer and Microsoft Teams together help get employees the right information at the right time. Using the two efficiently together, employees have a place for their questions and answers in Yammer, while the core team gets alignment on their responses in Teams.

Here’s the step by step way to add a Yammer group or #topic to a channel in Microsoft Teams.

Organizational Changes

Often there are large organizational changes announced to the company. Some companies create groups around those changes, for example an HR Benefits Group when new benefits packages are announced, or Open Enrollment occurs. A Yammer group for employee’s questions would be a place to post and get answers, or to point people to previously answered questions. These questions and answers are helpful to create additional content for FAQs.

What happens when not all answers are cut and dry? Some questions need a bit more clarity or involved a few more people before they can be answered. Easily share that conversation within Teams in a HR Core Team channel to discuss directly before making a comment or answering. This allows everyone to be on the same page and have correct information to employees.

Community Management best practice: If a question is asked, be sure to answer it. Even if the answer is about taking the question “offline”, don’t leave a question unanswered. The group is watching to see how the group admins are handling questions and comments and it will set precedent as you build your community.

Event Production

If the event is hosted LIVE or a YamJam in Yammer, you can use both Microsoft Teams and Yammer together for the best experience for your audience. Some organizations have Yammer groups for each event while other customers have departmental groups and host multiple events within that group.

While the event is going on, there may be a question or comment that needs further discussion with the event team before its answered, either ON AIR or in Yammer. The team can discuss amongst themselves and get back to the original question quickly with an answer. Using Teams provides a backchannel for the event team to coordinate prior to a response.

Community Management best practice: For longevity purposes, encourage questions in Yammer. Questions and answers can be preserved after the event concludes.

Software Rollout Projects

When new software rolls out to your organization, change can be hard. Employees have questions about efficiency and productivity. IT Project teams have been successful in creating self-help Yammer communities to support these rollouts and changes.

Yet when issues and concerns or product improvement are shared, the IT Project team needs a place to converse and determine what should be shared and posted to the wider community. Having an IT Project Core Team channel creates a place for the group to discuss an upcoming outage or an unplanned issue before alerting employees.

Community Management best practice: If something isn’t functioning as expected, share that with the community. If you don’t have resolution yet, share that even if the answer is “we are working on it still.”

Marketing and Sales – using a Yammer #topic

The customer facing teams need to stay in the loop about the competition, and yet they may not know of how marketing or the organization is helping prepare for the competition. When the competition is brought up on the Yammer network, the marketing team can keep a pulse without having to be part of every group or conversation on Yammer.

The Marketing Team can have the Yammer Tab in Teams set to follow a specific hashtag, like the competitors name. When the hashtag is used in the Yammer network, the tab is populated to start the conversation in the Team channel. The marketing team can easily follow up with specific tactics, content or additional questions in relation to the competitor.

Community Management best practice: You may discover new conversations happening in parts of Yammer that you aren’t normally participating in. You may not necessarily need to join EVERY group that is mentioned, but this is a good way to listen to your Yammer network for specific keywords.
