  1. November 1803->1903 failed; Running Windows10UpgradeApp seemed to rollback to Windows 7 API

    Hello,

This is a strange problem relating directly to the 1903 Update. This is a long post has a many pictures.

I'm using my Dad's PC which successfully updated from 8.1 to 10.1703 to 10.1803 to 10.1903 with no issues.

This started on October 31st, 2019 when my PC a 2016 win7 to win10 upgrade downloaded the 1903 Feature Update and restarted.

Since I do not allow Telemetry or Automatic Updates it asked me to so so. But I decided I wanted to stay at the 1803 level until the 1903 Update issues were resolved. Reading the forums I see many people are still having 1903 Update issues.

However, I tried to stop the update, it didn't work. My PC was fine even though Windows kept asking to RESTART. I chose No. I did shutdown, and rebooted many times from October 31 to November 3rd, and it started fine. Games ran, programs ran.

This was desktop on November 2nd before 1903 "Update" I deleted the 1903 \Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download folder and turned off Updates- I take screenshots for prosperity. On Nov. 3rd AVG asked to RESTART, and RESTART I think caused a cached 1903 Update Restart Trigger. Few programs stopped running or crashed. Giving me an "Application Initialization Error". This started after the RESTART from the 1903 Update. Shutting down had no effect. That RESTART changed everything for my PC.

November 1, 2019. My desktop seemed okay, and was functional.

And now after since late November 3rd RESTART it looks like this. The SystemTray is black and I can't I interact with the desktop. It's like wallpaper! I can't see the login screen when it boots up, it's just a black screen.

I've had many failed System Restores and no luck with going into "Safe Mode" which just took me back to the Windows Recovery Environment winRE. The thing is that my PC loads "fine". I can use Windows Key+X to open an Admin Command Prompt, Shutdown, or Restart. I can't use the other options.

Occasionally, when I plug in a USB drive the folder opens up, BUT I can't I interact with it. However, using WindowsKey+Tab allows me to focus any window I want to use. And I can use SOME programs, like Firefox and Thunderbird. But programs like Adobe programs and MAGIX ACIDPro 9 fail to start, and crash on load.

I can press PrintScreen to save to the cloud, this is how I'm able to share these screenshots.

This is what I've done so far, to no avail:

    - Accessed WinRE. Did System Restore to BEFORE Update download: failed everytime with Error 0x80070003.

    - Accessed WinRE again to attempt to get into Windows 10 Safe Mode: failed to load. Just restarted and took me back into WinRE.

[The desktop will appear with full icons, and other times just the wallpaper or just black. The taskbar remains. Can be updated by pressing the WindowsKey, and sometime passing the mouse cursor over the bar to refresh the icons]

    - Decided to "force" the 1903 update: Using the defunct "wuauclt.exe" and "wuapp.exe": to no avail

-Tried running "UsoClient" with "StartScan" StartDownload" and "StartInstall" switches. These don't seem to have any effect.

    - I even stopped all networked activity, BITS, CryptSvc and renamed and eventually deleted the SoftwareDistribution folder: to no avail-Tried running "Add Programs" from Admin Command prompt wizapp.cpl but got "16bit program not compatible" error.

[I cannot see or access this screen. All the window frames look like Windows 7, as seen in the previous shots]

I have considered a reset, but then I noticed that Windows downloaded ESD files for the 1903 Feature update on two of my USB drives.

So I opened another Admin Command prompt and ran Windows10UpgraderApp from the Window10Upgrade folder. I did not realise that this was intended fromupgrades from Windows 7, as that is what this PC was. But looking at the screens, it seemed to work.

At first it got stuck on 99% for hours. Then I ran it again and then got the above screen, and then .. nothing.

So I thought deleting the ESD files, and doing the download from the beginning may help..so it went trhough all that and then..

This was the first time I saw this after several attempts. The upgrader_default.log file mentions stuff like this:

Then it just stops.. These lines [ActionType: ConfigRollbackRun 0x2500]and [ActionType: RunSetupForWin7Later 0x2400] cause me the most cpncern. What did I do by running Windows10UpgraderApp? I think after running theWindows10UpgraderApp so many times that I'm concerned it might have modified the original installation. That a reset may fail. My PC boots, but I never see the login screen. I hear to start up tune, and the desktop will load with all the icons, or just the wallpaper. I can't run all of my programs and games. It's barely useable. It's been like this since November 4, 2019.

I believe I just need the OS to refresh the files that were modified or altered after the failed updates. I am just running out of ideas as to how to do that. As I mentioned, I can do a reset, but if there are ANY IDEAS, please help if you're able.

Thanks for reading and for following up. Take care.

  2. Trouble Upgrading 1803 to 1903 - Fails to restart

I’m still running the UEFI tests (Someone stepped on the power cable pulling it out so lost a lot of time!)

It’s in loop until failure, but does that mean test never ends!?

    Current progress:

Version 1803 updated to 1903, Performed Rollback, Rolled to 1803, Need 1809

We did an update this morning from 1803 intending to go to 1809 but 1903 was installed. We did a rollback and it took the computer back to version 1803. For compatibility issues with one of our carrier sites we need version 1809 as they are not compatible
with 1903 yet, but we do not see an option to update to 1809 after the rollback. How do I get 1809 installed if it's not showing as an option in updated & security?
