Thanks Ztruker.

Before I proceed with the MemTest, I will refer to our earlier discussion about Windows 10 (and BIOS) reporting my RAM as only 4Gb, as opposed to the supposed 8Gb (laptop actually performs as well if not slightly better now). Also curious that once or twice a week, the HP Bios update will kick in upon starting up.

I will try your suggestion with swapping around the RAM modules and will report my findings.

Thank you!

What is the full model number of the laptop? Pavilion G6-xxxxx ????

Edit: I'm wondering if there is a BIOS update available?

3. HP Pavilion g6-2391nr
BIOS version F.29
I have the System board ID number and CT number if that is relevant.

On the subject of RAM, the laptop couldn't start having only one 4Gb module slotted in the top slot (same results with either RAM module). In the end, I switched the two 4Gb RAM modules between the two slots - Windows and BIOS still report as only 4Gb instead of 8Gb.

Shall I try the BIOS update before the MemTest (I don't know how to manually update the BIOS)?.

There is this:

Code: HP Notebook System BIOS Update (AMD Processors) F.26 7.8 MB Mar 1, 2016
Version is older than the F.29 you currently have but the date is much newer.

Code: BIOS Version/Date Insyde F.29, 6/6/2014
Not sure what to do at the moment, let me look at this some more.

The web site is whacked. The Details for that BIOS upgrade show this:
Code: Details This package provides an update to the System BIOS. The update installs on supported notebook models using a supported Microsoft Windows Operating System. A reboot is required to complete the installation. File name: sp60936.exe Release details Released: Mar 1, 2013 Version F.26 Fix and enhancements - Fixes an issue where a system that has entered sleep (S3) or hibernate (S4) modes does not wake on LAN properly from a powered off (S5) state.- Provides improved memory performance.
Note the actual release date, which makes more sense.

From everything I can find, F.29 is the latest BIOS and there are some indications it is no longer available from HP though I can't find out why.

6. Firstly, sorry for bumping this old thread, but I am doing this for the sake of continuity of my problem.

a) Believe it or not, I still haven't got the chance to do the MEM test yet, also especially since my laptop is crashing less often and not too disruptive of my work - in addition to it always performing as how it should (despited claiming only having 4Gb RAM instead of the supposed 8Gb).

b) but I would like to bring to you a set of new problems related to the anniversary update since September - and would like to ask you if these are related to my known issues, or a different issue altogether which warrants a new separate thread:

Laptop forces attempt to do the anniversary update every week or so, and fails to update everytime.Tried to install Windows 10 with ISO with all USBs unplugged, and Norton antivirus off - still failed.

After the failed update, all Microsoft Windows 10 apps disappeared (no search function, Edge, Windows store, News etc etc etc).
Every restart will prompt the 'low disk space' error - even though I still have 380 Gb left.

c) Also, am I right to assume that it is still 'safe' to only have the 1511 version of Windows 10, because I am still getting the critical updates?

Sorry if this shouldn't be the thread for it - but just checking if it is related to my original problem.Thank you!

If I were in your place, I would backup my data and do a clean install, with format, of the latest version of Windows 10 which I believe is 14393, the Anniversary update.

Then run windows update until they are all downloaded and installed.

Finally, check device drivers an update any that have updates available.

It's a lot of work and time consuming but will give a good, hopefully solid Win 10.
