Windows 10: NTLDR missing on USB boot

ok will give it a go. Is this just doing what Rufus should do for me in 1 click of a mouse? Are you saying that in this case I should not use Rufus & if so why?

Sorry for so many dumb questions, but I guess you have figured out I don't really know what I am doing!

 

Whenever someone says their USB flash drive won't boot, the first question I ask is "What did you use to create it with". The answer usually is Rufus. Rufus is too complicated, has too many options that must be set in a particular order and it is very easy to make a mistake with it - and for creating a Windows 10 installation USB flash drive it is also completely unnecessary. Rufus is far from a "one click" solution.

 

Rufus generally is OK...if you follow the correct procedure - I never had problems with it and still follow it's development from a technical point of view - but Windows boot image files have evolved since Win 8 and as Navy says... copy and paste works fine ( with Active partition if MBR)

The multple partition thingy (regarding the EFI ->FAT32->4gb+ file restriction) can be overcome by CU as well.. Cereberus knows *Wink

 

The manual for your computer says you can press F8 at boot to get to teh boot menu where you should be able to select the flash drive. Leave the boot order as hard drive then optical and use F8.

Do you have any other computers running vista, 7, 8 or 10 that you could use to create the USB flash drive? If not, how about a friends computer?

Also, are you creating a 64 or 32 bit flash drive? If XP 64 or 32 bit?

Well at least I can get to the first install screen - havent gone any further as I have to go out just now.

FYI to get to the boot menu, I used f11 (thats what it said on the initial flash screen).

Having gone though all this, I have just been given a newer Gigabyte H55M-UD2H mobo, so will rip this system apart and rebuild using it. It has been a useful learning experience anyway. Thanks again *Biggrin

 

Too little, too late: but some older systems have issues trying to boot from a USB 3.0 flash drive, even when plugged into (and emulating/reverting to) USB 2.0. I've been in situations where simply cloning a USB 3.0 flash drive onto a USB 2.0 flash drive did the trick. You probably won't have such issues with your newer Gigabyte mobo.
